Gladys Knight wins achievement award

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. After being lauded as an inspiration, Gladys Knight received the Black Entertainment Television Lifetime Achievement Award June 28.

Grammy winner Alicia Keys introduced Gladys Knight, a Latter-day Saint who lives in Las Vegas, Nev., at the event held here in the Kodak Theatre. "You're an inspiration to me and to so many," she said.

In her acceptance speech, Sister Knight called the lifetime award "humbling."

"I want to say three names that I think all of you will identify with and if you don't identify with them, then I know you've heard of them before," she said. "And that is, my Heavenly Father God, who made such an awesome plan for my life. My big Brother Jesus Christ; He is our brother because we're all (God's) children. Because He came down here and showed us how it was supposed to be done, so I had a road map. And the Holy Spirit because He's been there, to lead and guide and show me the way."

Sister Knight then went on to sing three of her No. 1 hits songs.

Black Entertainment Television has honored achievement in music, entertainment and sport with a live telecast for the last five years.
