Re-enacting Relief Society founding

NAUVOO, Ill. — Sisters of the Illinois Nauvoo Mission celebrated the 164th birthday of the organization of the Relief Society March 17 with a program depicting scenes from the original organization held on the upper floor of Joseph Smith's Red Brick Store.

The group of 18 women met in the replica of the Red Brick Store where the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo was organized on March 17, 1842, by the Prophet Joseph Smith.

As in the original meeting, the celebration began with singing "The Spirit of God." Joseph Smith was portrayed by Elder Sidney Kooyman, and Sister Roxanna Kooyman portrayed Emma Smith, elected as the first president of the society. — Sister Sally D. Larson, Historic Nauvoo public affairs
