Cove Fort untouched by fire

COVE FORT, Utah — A lightning-caused fire just north of the Church's historic Cove Fort in southern Utah burned at least 10,000 acres, by July 18. A preventive burnout around Cove Fort, which features pioneer-era structures, helped protect that area.

The fire forced the closure of Interstate 15 for several hours July 16 and about 50 people were evacuated from homes in the Cove Fort area, which is near the junction of I-15 and Interstate 70. Residents were allowed to return to their homes about 10 p.m. July 16, and the interstate was reopened about midnight.
