VALDIVIA, Chile Pamela Linco's coach describes the young LDS athlete as "a young woman with a winner's mentality." Now she's also a South American rowing champion.
Pamela recently claimed victory in the South American rowing championships in Paraguay. It was there that many observers learned of her strength and personal charm as she won the doubles rowing event. Her success also helped Chile finish at the top of the team standings in rowing.
Pamela has worked hard to be a good example of what it means to be an LDS young woman. Following her return from Paraguay, she wore her gold medal as she bore her testimony of the gospel and its teachings.
"I am very close to my family, so it is hard to leave them when I have to travel to compete," said Pamela. "But on the many trips that I have taken, my most faithful companion has been the Book of Mormon."
The young athlete is a member of the Regional Ward of the Valdivia Chile Stake. At the age of 16, Pamela has won the admiration of her family, her fellow ward and stake members and many others from her community.
She possesses a strong testimony of the gospel and displays humility and a strong desire to succeed not only in sports, but also in her personal, family and academic life, and in becoming a stronger daughter of God.
A sister to three brothers, Pamela began rowing in 2001 to help improve physical fitness. As she progressed in the sport, oberservers marveled at her incredible strength that is well suited for rowing, said her mother, Patricia Linco.
Pamela has enjoyed success in rowing and was soon winning local, national and international competitions. Last year, she placed third in the South American championships in Brazil, before winning this year's competition in Paraguay.
Active in seminary and Young Women, she gives credit to her Heavenly Father for helping her work toward her goals. Pamela said her coaches respect her decision not to train on the Sabbath.
She is also thankful for the role the Word of Wisdom plays in her training and athletic success. "Without a doubt, living the Word of Wisdom faithfully has given me strength."
