Living by the scriptures

Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins? — Alma 5:27

As I washed dishes one day, heavy with our fourth baby, I began to bleed, showing that there was a problem with this pregnancy. A member in our ward, a policeman, was called and he rushed me to the hospital, and then he contacted my husband, who was looking for lost members as our ward clerk.

A C-section brought this child into the world somewhat early. His lungs were not developed enough at that time, so he lived only a short while, dying before I was even to see him. He was a beautiful red-headed child and we were thrilled that he had obtained his body, but sad that we were not going to be able to raise him just then.

Reading the Book of Mormon in Alma 5:27, we felt that this special son's short life would encourage us and our other three children and, later, three more, to indeed walk blameless before God.

On my son Alma's headstone is placed Alma 5:27, to also remind others to heed this scripture, which has helped us to follow our Savior and the prophet Alma's words each day of our lives. — Ilana Thompson, Chapmanville, West Virginia
