NEW YORK CITY
A dodgeball team loaded with players from the New York New York Stake recently won its second-straight Manhattan championship. Named "Davis Bell and Friends," the team participates in the ZogSports co-ed social sports club which is charity-focused.
With the 2008 Winter season championship came a cash prize, donated to the team's charity of choice Right to Play, an entity that uses sports programs to help children in impoverished countries. Winnings from its first championship went to Special Olympics.
Of the 14 players on the team, 13 are Church members. From the Morningside Heights Ward are team captain Andrea and Slade Combs, Cameron Van Tassel, Davis Bell, Melissa Harrison and Jon Moe. Craig and Mary Romney are from the Manhattan 1st Ward, Ryan Baughman and Adrenne Martin are from the Manhattan 8th Ward and Nate Bowen is from the Union Square 1st Ward. Team members Jeremiah and Breanne Simpson are members of the Park Slope Ward, Brooklyn New York Stake. Mike Cook is the only non-LDS member of the team.
Brother Combs, who ran track with his wife at BYU, said team members' connections include BYU, Church and mutual friendship.
