President Gordon B. Hinckley, then second counselor in the First Presidency, was among those attending the annual Territorial Ball on July 23, 1983, as part of the Days of '47 celebration.

Others who attended the ball at the Utah governor's mansion, according to the July 31, 1983, Church News, were Elder Sterling W. Sill, an emeritus General Authority, and General Relief Society President Barbara B. Smith.

The article stated: "The ball was organized six years ago in honor of the early territorial balls begun by pioneers who first entered the Salt Lake Valley."

In a presentation, Elder Sill said, "I am personally very grateful for the fact that when God created us in His own image, He made us all gregarious. We do better when we live together in nations and cities and families and learn to love and serve each other."
