Freedom youth visit historic sites

FREEDOM, N.Y.

Youth of the historic Freedom Branch, Buffalo New York Stake, visited the Joseph Smith farm and Sacred Grove in Palmyra on Monday, Oct. 13 — Columbus Day — then performed baptisms for the dead in the Palmyra New York Temple.

Five youth, including an investigator (who has recently committed to baptism in November) made the two-hour trip, along with Branch President Daniel Miess and other leaders.

The activity came about one month before an important anniversary for their branch. Freedom is the location of the branch mentioned in Doctrine and Covenants 106, a revelation received on Nov. 25, 1834, wherein Warren A. Cowdery, older brother to Oliver Cowdery, was called by the Prophet Joseph Smith to "be appointed and ordained a presiding high priest over my church, in the land of Freedom and the regions round about."

The current Freedom Branch is located in Arcade, five miles from the village of Freedom. About eight years ago, the name of the branch was changed from Arcade to Freedom in honor of the 1834 original branch.
