"The Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea he trieth their patience and their faith." Mosiah 23:21
My 84-year-old bones are brittle. During the past few months, I have endured compression fractures of three of my vertebrae. The pain was intense. Death would have been a welcome release, yet I was willing to accept the Lord's will and abide by His timetable. I wondered what lessons I needed to learn.
The answer came when I read about Alma and his followers who had made baptismal covenants and later fled into the wilderness to escape King Noah. Though Alma's little group of believers was faithful and united, "… nevertheless, the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea he trieth their patience and their faith."
Alma's little group passed the test! The 24th chapter of Mosiah tells of the persecution of Alma and his followers by Amulon. "So great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them" assuring them of delivery from bondage (Mosiah 24:16).
Applying this scripture to my own situation, my patience and faith are now being tested.
I hope to endure, with patience and faith, whatever other tests may lie before me.
