Living by the scriptures

"For it shall be given you in the very hour, yea, in the very moment, what ye shall say."— Doctrine and Covenants 100:6

Ten years had passed since I had seen that family, however, as our eyes met, it was evident that time hadn't healed the wound. The thought came to me that I should approach them to make amends. However, being somewhat shy and reserved by nature, especially within a crowd, I thought to myself, what on earth would I say?

Then, I remembered the scripture, "For it shall be given you in the very hour, yea, in the very moment, what ye shall say." Feeling the power of those words and recognizing that it was the prompting of the Spirit I immediately approached them at the table where they sat. The conversation was led into how much the community has grown and how some of my old friends had moved away and changed their ways. At that point, I then looked them in the eyes and told them that I had changed too.

Taking both the husband and wife by hand, I asked them to forgive me for my misdeeds toward them. Emotions started to flow, and I could see that both were holding back tears. In a crackled voice the husband said, "We forgive you, Roy," and his wife, following closely in sync, firmly squeezed my hand and with heartfelt gratitude said, "Thank you."

I remember feeling such peace of conscience and that a great weight had been lifted from my heart, which I didn't realize was even there. Looking back, I know that the "miracle of forgiveness" is the healing balm for offenses committed toward God's children. Since that time, I've learned to recognize the promptings of the Spirit and, more importantly, to act upon them. May we all follow the counsel of our prophet, Thomas S. Monson, who has repeatedly said, "Never ... postpone a prompting."
