- The nation's capital and surrounding areas have seen a great increase in Church growth during the past 15 years since the Washington Temple was dedicated. The white portion of the map indicates the boundaries of the four original stakes existing in the area a decade and a half ago. At the time, Church membership was 21,000.
Today, there are 19 stakes in the same area and membership has tripled, with some 63,000 members.The temple is located in Kensington, Md., and seen daily by thousands of motorists driving the Washington Beltway. A Nov. 19 anniversary assembly launched a year of commemorative events. During the coming year, stakes in the area will plan various activities to celebrate the temple's anniversary.
