An LDS mother of four, who taught her children gospel principles and then let them use their free agency, was named the national 1990 Mother of the Year April 29 in New York City.
Nadine Thomas Matis, Utah's representative and a member of the Burch Creek Ward, Ogden Utah Burch Creek Stake, was selected from a field of 41 participants from across the country. A 52-year-old counselor and psychologist, she married John A. Matis on Sept. 11, 1957, in Salt Lake City, and they have two sons and two daughters.According to one of her sons, Steve, a student at Weber State College, she has used the philosophy of "teaching us everything she knows to make us the best people possible, and then letting us take it from there." Sister Matis earned a doctorate at BYU in counseling and psychology and is now a counselor at McKay Dee Hospital's Institute for Behavioral Medicine.
Two other LDS women represented their states for the national title, and seven were considered for Young Mother of the Year, at the weeklong convention held at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria.
The criteria by which the women were chosen as state representatives were their commitment as mothers, application of their faith in their homes, training of their children to be good citizens, personal development and community service.
Also honored at the convention were four Latter-day Saints who received awards for Distinguished Services to the American Mothers, Inc.: Adelaide N. McAllister (27th East Ward, Salt Lake Emigration Stake), Ellen N. Barnes (Monument Park 17th Ward, Salt Lake Monument Park Stake), Phyllis B. Marriott (Kensington Ward, Washington D.C. Stake), and Charles F. Graves (Westchester Ward, Scarsdale New York Stake).
American Mothers Inc., is the sponsor for Mother of the Year. The National Convention chairman, Susan Hickenlooper, is a member of the New Canaan Ward, Yorktown New York Stake, as is the co-chairman, Kathy Woodbury.
