Brad Pearce of the Edgemont 13th Ward, Provo Utah Edgemont North Stake, reached the quarterfinals in men's singles (see July 14 Church News) and Rich Leach, a 25-year-old elder in the Laguna Beach Ward, Laguna Niguel California Stake, captured top honors in men's and mixed doubles. In the men's final, Leach and his partner, Jimmy Pugh, downed the South African team of Pieter Aldrich and Donnie Visser, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Leach and partner Zina Garrison won in mixed doubles over John Fizgerald and Liz Smylie of Austrialia, 7-5, 6-2.
Leach graduated from the University of Southern California in 1987, where he was the only four-year All-American in both singles and doubles in NCAA history.
He was coached in college by his father, Richard Leach.
