Funds help Philippine earthquake victims

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Council of the Twelve presented the Philippine ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Pelaez, with a check for $25,000 on Sept. 21 for earthquake relief in the Philippines.

The check comes from funds donated privately by Church members for humanitarian purposes. The money was donated to help the victims of the July 16 earthquake that hit the Philippines.The killer quake registered 7.7 on the Richter scale and claimed 1,600 lives, injured 3,516 and rendered more than 27,000 families homeless.

Four members of the Church were among the dead. More than 100 homes belonging to LDS members on the northern Luzon Island were destroyed in the quake and 340 homes of members were damaged.

The Philippine ambassador received the donation in behalf of the Filipino-American Community of the Washington, D.C. area, and the Philippine American Foundation.
