Paced by the nation's second-leading junior college runner, Garden City (Kan.) Community College defeated Ricks College, 29-17, in the Real Dairy Centennial Bowl here Nov. 16.
Broncbuster tailback Kevin Bouie, who averages 162 yards rushing a game, gained 149 yards on 31 carries to lead Garden City to victory. He was aided by teammate Gerald Benton, who scored twice and rushed nine times for 87 yards.The game was played before a crowd of 5,710, and marked the beginning of National Junior College Athletic Association-sanctioned bowl competition, which will culminate with the national championship in Tulsa, Okla., Dec. 2.
The win is the second straight for Garden City, runner-up in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference, in the annual Centennial Bowl, now in its fourth year. The Broncbusters defeated the Vikings last year, 19-17.
Garden City raced to a 14-0 lead on Benton's two scores in the first quarter. Ricks pulled within four points at halftime on a one-yard run by Craig Ashby and a 36-yard field goal by Truman Child.
A safety and 37-yard field goal by Shannon Atkins gave Garden City a 19-10 lead in the second half before Ashby's second one-yard touchdown run brought the Vikings within two at 19-17. A 25-yard scoring run by Garden City's Derrick Clark with 9:59 left was followed by a 26-yard field goal by Atkins for the final winning margin.
Garden City, ranked 13th nationally, finished the season at 8-3. Ricks, ranked 12th, finished at 7-4.
