New mission presidents

The calling of four more mission presidents has been announced by the First Presidency. The new presidents and their wives will begin their service about July 1. Specific mission assignments will be announced later. Those called are:

Hendricus Johannes Martinus Hoole Jr., 60, Yalecrest 2nd Ward, Salt Lake Bonneville Stake; Sunday School president, former high councilor, bishop's counselor, high priest group leader, ward mission leader, stake missionary, Young Men president, Sunday School teacher; served a mission to the Netherlands, 1953-55; agent for New York Life Insurance Company; received bachelor's degree from University of Utah; born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a son of Hendricus Johannes Martinus and Johanna Sickmann Hoole; married Daryl Van Dam; nine children. She is on the Primary General Board, former stake Relief Society counselor and board member, Sunday School teacher, Relief Society president, counselor and teacher, den mother, Young Women adviser; served mission to the Netherlands, 1952-56; author, instructor and lecturer on home management; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of Donovan Herbert and Ada Strong Van Dam.

Joseph Alan Nelson, 59, Canyon View 4th Ward, Orem Utah Canyon View Stake; president of BYU 3rd Stake, former Missionary Training Center district and branch president, stake presidency counselor, high councilor, bishop; served in the Southern States Mission, 1951-53; retired from JC Penney Co.; received bachelor's degree from BYU and master's degree from New York University; born in Tooele, Utah, a son of George Edward and Alice Smith Nelson; married Marjorie Allen; five children. She is a counselor in stake Relief Society presidency, former stake Relief Society counselor, ward Relief Society president and teacher, ward organist, Young Women adviser, Primary teacher, Sunday School teacher; received bachelor's degree from BYU; born in Tooele, Utah, a daughter of George and Grace Mecham Allen.

Gary Keith Spencer, 60, Orem Canyon View 1st Ward, Orem Utah Canyon View Stake; first counselor in Utah Provo Mission, former stake president, high councilor, bishop, stake Sunday School president; served in Norwegian Mission, 1950-52; retired colonel in U.S. Air Force; received bachelor's degree from University of Utah, master's degree from Troy State University; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of Arthur Milton and Ingaborg Marie Johnson Spencer; married Mary Carolyn Pettigrew; four children. Serving with husband in Utah Provo Mission, former stake Relief Society counselor, stake Young Women counselor, Relief Society teacher, Primary teacher, Young Women president; logistics coordinator for Covey Leadership Center; received bachelor's degree from University of Utah; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of Alma Helaman and Edith Merle Hill Pettigrew.

Owen Daniel West Jr., 59, Arlington Heights 1st Ward, Schaumburg Illinois Stake; second counselor in stake mission presidency, former stake president and counselor, bishop and counselor, stake Young Men's president, stake missionary, stake Sunday School counselor, high priest group leader, elder's quorum president, Young Men adviser, Sunday School teacher, family history librarian; served in Northwestern States Mission, 1951-52; vice president of Continental Bank; received bachelor's degree from University of Colorado and master's degree from University of Denver; born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of Owen Daniel and Eva Pearl Stice West; married E. Geraldine Halliday; four children. She is a Chicago Temple ordinance worker, former counselor in stake Relief Society, Young Women and Primary presidencies, counselor in ward Relief Society, Young Women and Primary presidencies; early morning seminary teacher; received nursing degree from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing; born in Preston, Idaho, a daughter of Stephen F. and Evelean Coburn Halliday.
