Parables are spiritually discerned

"I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world." (Matt. 13:35.)

Priceless truths are not understood by the casual reader of the scriptures, Elder Spencer W. Kimball said in his October 1964 general conference address while he was serving in the Council of the Twelve." `For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God. . . .

" `But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.' " (1 Cor. 2:11, 14.)

Elder Kimball said: "Explaining the use of parables, the Savior said:

" `Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. . . .

" `For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.' (Matt. 13:11, 15.)

"And then speaking to those disciples who were near Him and who understood, He said:

" `But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

" `For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.' " (Matt. 13:16-17.)
