Why was David's reign regarded as Israel's golden age?

David's reign was the most brilliant of the area's history. As king, he united the tribes into one nation, secured undisputed possession of the country, rested the whole government upon a religious basis and made the will of God the law. For these reasons his reign was, in later times, regarded as the nation's golden age.
