And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls. – Alma 17:11.
My husband, I, and our six children have moved to Brazil, and we have found ourselves in a unique learning situation. Not only are we 8,000 miles from home, but we are also learning a new language, a new culture, making new friends, and leaving behind family and loved ones.
At times the adjustments have been difficult. Our testimonies, our faith in Christ and the Church have helped us through this new adventure.
One of the difficulties has been the language barrier and my inability to share my testimony, which is so important to me. I am unable to share it with others.
One special fast and testimony meeting, as I was listening to others share their testimonies, my desire to share my testimony was so great I began to cry. However, I had not yet mastered my new language, and I just didn't have the words. I prayed in my heart for comfort. Alma 17:11 brought me the comfort and answers that I sought. I needed to be patient, and in time I would be able to share my testimony. In the meantime, I could share it by my example. I felt such great comfort in knowing this.
In the next few weeks I set forth to share my testimony through my example. Never before have a smile, a meaningful handshake, a hug or a kiss on the cheek carried so much meaning. These small Christlike actions helped me by "showing" my testimony.
I can now express my testimony in words, and how special this is, but I will never forget that day when I realized how important it is to be an example in Christ.
