The appointment of Elder Ezra Taft Benson of the Council of the Twelve as president of the European Mission was announced in the Jan. 19, 1946, Church News.

Mission headquarters at the time were in London, England.

"Elder Benson will be president of the European Mission and will attend to the spiritual affairs of the Church in Europe," the article said. "He will also work to make available food, clothing and bedding for the Saints in distress in all European countries. He will direct also the reorganizing of the various missions in Europe and prepare for the return of missionaries to those countries."

Elder Benson had been a missionary in England from 1921-23 and had toured the countries of Europe during his time of service there.
