Church News: Deaths

Neil W. Kooyman, 81, former mission president and manager of distribution for the Church, died Sept. 16, 1996, in Salt Lake City. Brother Kooyman served as distribution manager from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. He served as president of the Netherlands Amsterdam Mission from 1974-1977 and as president of the Salt Lake Granite Stake from 1972-1974.

  • Prominent LDS artist Theodore Gorka, 79, died Aug. 26, 1996, in Columbia, S.C. He donated several paintings to the Church, including one of Joseph Smith that has hung in the lobby of the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City. His best-known painting, "South Carolina Governors Reunion," hangs in the Capital City Club in Columbia.
