New temple president

Barbara and Elder Joe J. Christensen

Elder Joe J. Christensen, 70, Valley View 7th Ward, Salt Lake Valley View Stake, called as president of the San Diego California Temple, succeeding Pres. J. Clifford Wallace. Elder Christensen's wife, Barbara Kohler Christensen, will serve as temple matron.

Elder Christensen was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy April 1, 1989, and served in the Presidency of the Seventy from Aug. 15, 1993, until August 1999. He served as president of the Mexico Mexico City Mission, the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, and in the general Sunday School presidency, general Young Men presidency, as regional representative, high councilor and bishop. He is a former president of Ricks College, associate commissioner of the Church Educational System, and institute director. He received a bachelor's degree from BYU and doctorate from Washington State University. He was born in Banida, Idaho, to Joseph A. and Goldie Miles Christensen.

Sister Christensen is a former stake Relief Society president, stake Primary president, teacher development director and Relief Society instructor. She received a bachelor's degree from BYU. She was born in Midway, Utah, to Albert Ferdinand and Elsie Richards Kohler.
