Carthage Jail

A jail in Carthage, Ill., some 25 miles to the southeast of Nauvoo, will forever remain imprinted in the minds of faithful Latter-day Saints throughout the world.

Here, on June 27, 1844, Joseph and Hyrum Smith were martyred by a mob in a shower of bullets. Today, the jail stands restored to what it looked like in the 1840s, and a visitors center has been added. A statue of Joseph and Hyrum seems to stand sentinel on the grounds.

So far this year, 51,649 visitors have toured the jail and the visitors center.
