A two-year project to put old Church membership records on film was under way, according to the Jan. 4, 1950, Church News. The Church had previously made a plea for all bishops and branch presidents to send in old records from their wards and branches.
Hundreds of such records had been received and were being microfilmed.
The original film would be kept by Church historian Elder Joseph Fielding Smith of the Quorum of the Twelve, the article stated. It continued, "One copy will be placed in the Historian's Library, and one copy will be placed in the Genealogical Library."
The film in the Genealogical Library would make it easier for the public to do research, the article said.
