Those who stray from Church need a friend who knows the Shepherd

"People who drift away from the true doctrine usually know in their hearts something is missing. The kernel of truth, though small, remains — never to be replaced with fame or money or worldly pleasures," Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve said at the October 1981 general conference.

Those who stray, Elder Haight said, need a friend — one who knows the Shepherd. "Seldom do people cease coming to Church because of doctrine; they are waiting for a show of genuine love and friendly fellowship to heal their hurts or doubts.

"Nephi testified 'that the Lord worketh not in darkness.

" 'He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. . . .

" 'Hath he commanded any that they should not partake of his salvation? . . . Nay; but . . . hath given it free for all men; and . . . hath commanded his people that they should persuade all men to repentance.' " (2 Nephi 26:23-25.)
