This week in Church history

President George Q. Cannon, first counselor in the First Presidency, one of the first missionaries to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), took part in a celebration in Hawaii on Dec. 12, 1900, according to Andrew Jenson's Church Chronology.

The book reports under the heading Wed., Dec. 12, 1900, "The fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of the gospel to the Sandwich Islands was celebrated at Honolulu, Hawaii. Pres. George Q. Cannon was the honored guest of the occasion. Over twelve hundred people were present, many having come from other islands."

In Jenson's Latter-Day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia (Vol. 1, p. 50), it adds of President Cannon: "The native saints fairly adored him as the instrument in the hands of God in the introduction of the gospel among them."
