Living by the scriptures

And no tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard Jesus speak; and no one can conceive of the joy which filled our souls at the time we heard him pray for us unto the Father. 3 Nephi 17:17

One of my favorite scriptures has always been this one found in Third Nephi. I have tried to imagine the joy that filled the souls of the saints when the Savior personally prayed for them.

The events of September 11, and the days that followed, have been unsettling to many people. We have found ourselves feeling threatened, and many of our daily routines challenged by taunting foes. We have been taught that perilous times will precede the Second Coming of our Savior. However, many of us never pictured that we would watch planes crashing into buildings. We sometimes have wondered if these are really the last days. If they are, then the only peace we can find will be in our testimonies of Jesus Christ.

I watched general conference of October 2001, with an anxious heart. I wondered how the prophet and General Authorities would refer to the troubled times that we face. How pleased I was to hear several of the speakers refer to the events of Sept. 11, and then tie them directly to the topics of their talks. I looked forward to the Sunday morning session, when President Gordon B. Hinckley had said he would speak more about the events. His talk taught us again how we must act in perilous times, even as U.S. air strikes were beginning over Afghanistan.

During President Hinckley's closing remarks, he again referred to the perilous times we now face. However, I was totally overcome when he asked to "offer a brief prayer in these circumstances." He then gave us the calm assurance we need not fear these calamitous times. My mind quickly went back to the Savior praying for the Nephites. That is what President Hinckley had done for us. Now my mind can begin to conceive of the joy which filled their souls at the time when they heard Jesus pray for them unto the Father. How thankful I am for a prophet to guide us in these latter days. — Patricia A. Passey, Sandy, Utah.
