[The preaching of the word] had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them — therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God.
— Alma 31:5
"When you touch the hearts of people you serve, you will try to help them feel that God loves them by the way you treat them," said Elder Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve during the October 1995 general conference. "You will be humble so that they are more likely to choose to be meek and lowly of heart. You will teach the word of God, when the Spirit prompts you, in a way that testifies of God's love for them and their need for the atonement of Jesus Christ. And you will teach them commandments they can keep."
