Living by the scriptures

“Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand.” — Jacob 4:10

My whole life I planned to serve a mission, so it surprised my family when I started seriously dating a returned missionary when I was 20 years old. As our relationship progressed, we started discussing marriage. The more we discussed marriage, the less I thought about serving a mission.

However, I could not shake the feeling that something was wrong. As I prayed at night to confirm my decision to get married, I received a firm “no.” I stubbornly continued to pray, hoping for a confirmation that my way was correct. I would hurry and jump into bed after saying my prayers, hoping to avoid hearing the “no” that I knew would inevitably follow my shallow pleas.

One night I was reading in the Book of Mormon when I found this scripture in Jacob 4:10: “Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand. For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works.”

That scripture thoroughly penetrated my heart as I realized that I was trying to counsel the Lord instead of trusting Him and taking counsel from Him. I repented of my stubbornness and lack of faith and began preparing for a mission.

The break-up was followed by a lot of pain, but I really learned to depend on the Lord and trust in Him during that time. It was a time of great spiritual growth that prepared me to serve Him as a missionary.a

I have now been happily married for 16 years to a wonderful man, and I never could have imagined at that time all the blessings Heavenly Father had in store for me.
