This week in Church history

The Guatemala City Guatemala Temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley, then second counselor in the First Presidency, in 10 sessions Dec. 14-16, 1984, as reported in the Dec. 23, 1984, Church News.

The article quoted President Hinckley: “I am satisfied that Father Lehi smiles this day. He smiles after untold generations of his sons and daughters … have been refined in the fires of terrible adversity. Now this generation, from whose eyes have fallen the scales of darkness, have grown in beauty to understand their capacity.”

The temple was the first in Central America. Among those joining President Hinckley at the dedication were Elder Boyd K. Packer and Elder James E. Faust of the Quorum of the Twelve, and Elder Richard G. Scott, then of the presidency of the Seventy.
