President Russell M. Nelson: 'We Can Do Better and Be Better'

President of the Church

Notable quotes:

"Whether you are diligently moving along the covenant path, have slipped or stepped from the covenant path or can’t even see the path from where you are now, I plead with you to repent. Experience the strengthening power of daily repentance — of doing and being a little better each day."
"Brethren, prayerfully seek to understand what stands in the way of your repentance. Identify what stops you from repenting. And then change! Repent! All of us can do better and be better than ever before."
"I bless you with the courage to repent daily and learn how to exercise full priesthood power. I bless you to communicate the love of the Savior to your wife and children and to all who know you. I bless you to do better and to be better. And I bless you that as you make these efforts, you will experience miracles in your life."

Summary points:

  1. When Jesus asks one to “repent,” He is inviting a change of mind as well as how one loves, thinks, serves, spends time, treats a spouse, teaches children and cares for one's body and health.
  2. The Lord does not expect perfection but rather a progression of becoming increasingly pure.
  3. The Lord needs men who put others’ welfare ahead of their own, who work to clearly hear the voice of the Spirit, who keep their covenants, who are sexually pure, who are eager to repent and who have a zeal to serve.

Talk summary:

“When Jesus asks you and me to 'repent,' He is inviting us to change our mind, our knowledge, our spirit — even the way we breathe. He is asking us to change the way we love, think, serve, spend our time, treat our wives, teach our children and even care for our bodies.”

Daily repentance is the pathway to purity, and personal purity can make one a powerful tool in God’s hands.

“Whether you are diligently moving along the covenant path, have slipped or stepped from the covenant path or can’t even see the path from where you are now, I plead with you to repent. Experience the strengthening power of daily repentance — of doing and being a little better each day.”

Brethren are to prayerfully seek and understand what stands in the way of their repentance. “Identify what stops you from repenting. And then change! Repent! All of us can do better and be better than ever before.”

The Lord needs men who put others’ welfare ahead of their own, who clearly hear the voice of the Spirit, who are sexually pure, who are eager to repent and who have a zeal to serve.

“I bless you to become those men. I bless you with the courage to repent daily and learn how to exercise full priesthood power. I bless you to communicate the love of the Savior to your wife and children and to all who know you. I bless you to do better and to be better. And I bless you that as you make these efforts, you will experience miracles in your life.”

Because I will be visiting and speaking with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and friends of other faiths in Arizona today, I received an invitation from the Arizona Republic to share some thoughts with their readership. I am always grateful for an opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings. . I wrote that for the last 35 years I have traveled the world, meeting with millions of men and women in more than 130 countries. I’ve witnessed the effects of poverty and wealth, seen the impact of education and the lack thereof, met the high in station and the humblest of souls, and been gratified by humanitarian outreach from so many who care deeply about the human condition—including the Church I now have the privilege of leading. . But the most profound thing I’ve witnessed is the unrivaled difference that belief in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, has in a person’s life. There is simply nothing to compare with the refining, ennobling strength and meaning that come into the life of a devoted believer and servant. . The Savior has the capacity to heal you from sin and sadness, from despair and heartache. I have felt this personally again and again. . I am including a link to the article in my bio and invite you to read it if you would like. As you do, I encourage you to consider sharing how making God the center of your lives has filled your own heart with hope.
