Mormon Newsroom Canada features members recalling 1978 revelation

A revelation that all worthy men could hold the priesthood was given in June 1978.

Now, 40 years later, "members of the Church in Canada remember this announcement as a time to rejoice," according to an article on Mormon Newsroom Canada.

One of those members was Walter Saunders, a Jamaican native who was living in Milton, Ontario, when the revelation was given.

"I felt happy and humble," he told Mormon Newsroom. "[The announcement] occurred shortly after I was baptized into the Church. I was excited and very comfortable when I heard the news."

Saunders would later serve in the Toronto Ontario Temple presidency.

Ellison Corbin, another member who immigrated to Canada from Barbaros in 1976, was baptized with his wife in 1978 despite his reservations about black men being unable to hold the priesthood or attend the temple. The new revelation on the priesthood, however, was received within weeks of their baptism.

"I was very happy and honored," he told Mormon Newsroom. "However, I could see that the members were also just as happy to see that the day had come to pass after so many years of waiting."

Corbin has since served as an ordinance worker in the Toronto Ontario Temple.
