Full-time missionary in Colombia in serious but stable condition after assault

Elder Maxwell Fish, 19, of San Antonio, Texas, was stabbed in the neck Friday, Feb. 24, in Popayán, Colombia

A full-time missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in the Colombia Cali Mission remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being stabbed Friday morning, Feb. 24.

Elder Maxwell Fish, 19, of San Antonio, Texas, has undergone multiple surgeries, said Church spokesperson Sam Penrod in a statement Sunday, Feb. 26.

Elder Fish and his companion were victims of a robbery and assault, being attacked in the street, with Elder Fish stabbed in the neck, Penrod said.

“His companion was not physically harmed and is receiving counseling,” he added. “Other missionaries in the vicinity of this crime have been moved out of the area as a precaution.

“Our prayers are with these missionaries and their families,” Penrod said, “that they may be strengthened and healed during this difficult time.”
