Matthew Grow is the managing director of the Church History Department, meaning that he knows a thing or two‚ or more, about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ pioneer heritage. In the Church News’ most recent podcast episode leading into the Pioneer Day celebrations and commemorations on July 24, Grow discussed pioneers and modern-day applications of their experiences.

July 24, 2022, will mark the 175th anniversary of the first main group of pioneers arriving in the present-day Salt Lake City area, with the Prophet Brigham Young declaring that “This is the right place.”

That the group was focused on creating a community — doing so under God’s direction and gospel teachings. “This isn’t a settlement of the West where it’s single men heading out first to seek their fortune and to begin settlements,” he said. “This is a settlement of entire communities, the old and the young, men and women, children, people with disabilities — the entire community moves.”

Church News podcast: Managing Director of the Church History Department Matt Grow on the importance of celebrating past and present pioneers

The Saints moved westward in order to accomplish this idea of Zion. Grow explained that while their story is an inspiring one, full of heroism and tragedy, it is also a spiritually powerful one, as these people’s desire was to gather together as one, united body.

President Russell M. Nelson has taught about and invited Latter-day Saints to participate in gathering Israel, which also relates to what these Saints did. Just as the pioneers joined together to fulfill the vision of Zion, this idea remains today as Latter-day Saints work to collect all of God’s children on both sides of the veil.

Similar to today, this entails gathering individuals from all over the world. For the pioneers, they came together in an actual location to build up Zion. Saints traveled from areas across the United States, Europe and others. In addition, there was also much change occurring both economically and religiously, as well as with the Industrial Revolution, Mexican-American War and the anti-slavery abolitionist movement taking place.

Despite facing immense hardships, however, the pioneers also found joy throughout their journey, singing and dancing along the way, Grow said. “If you read pioneer journals, they’re often filled with accounts of awe, of the natural beauty … . You find practical jokes among each other in pioneer journals as well.”

One aspect of their joy was the temple, he said. Even at the time of the Nauvoo Temple construction, the Saints understood they would not get to have access to the Lord’s house much longer, sensing that they would be driven out. Therefore, they used the time they had to do temple work, sealing families and endowing members with power in preparation for what lay ahead.

Grow said physical and practical preparations preceded the journey. However, he added: “The core preparation, I think, was that spiritual preparation. ‘Let’s go through the temple. Let’s complete our temple ordinances for ourselves so that we have the power and the spiritual vision to do what needs to be done.’”

Physically leaving this temple did not mean the temple left their minds, though. Upon arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, the pioneers began to make plans for the Salt Lake Temple right away, continuing to illustrate their true righteous desires. As they built first the city and later the temple, the Saints worked to maintain a clean community.

This diligent work ethic among the pioneer people was illustrated in the product of their work and in their personalities. Specifically, Grow pointed to the strength of the women. “One of the things that set the Latter-day Saint migration apart was the participation of women, the participation of families, old and young,” he said.

One of his ancestors traveled as a widow from Switzerland to the United States with three children, one of whom had epilepsy. Grow was impressed by her example of faith, vision and fortitude to have done this.

Grow explained that the migration of all the pioneers was perhaps a foundational act for many individuals in their faith, much like Latter-day Saints all over the world continue to do today. “The first big step was conversion,” he said. “The next big step was the gathering.”

Besides learning from the early pioneers who made sacrifices and exhibited a great deal of faith to travel to and settle in the Salt Lake Valley, Latter-day Saints today may also learn much from pioneers around the world, he said. “We need to make sure that we’re learning the pioneer stories from around the globe so that those stories can resonate and teach us.”

Many of the pioneers’ gravesites have “faith in every footstep” written on them. Their decision and commitment to travel west was not an easy task. In everyday life, there are a plethora of challenges and continuous trials to face. Latter-day Saints today may do well to keep this motto in mind, Grow suggested, to continue on in faith.

He feels it was remarkable that Heavenly Father was able to gather average people from across the globe to accomplish something extraordinary, adding that this is what God is doing with His children today. “What I know now is that that’s what He’s trying to do with us — take us where we’re at, with our flaws and our limitations and our desires to do good and be righteous and contribute. …

“As I see what they did and what God did with and for them, there’s real power in the spiritual concept of remembering, and as we remember, we tap into some of that spiritual power they had. It gives us a little bit of boost in our own lives.”

Similarly, Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife, Sister Mary Cook, shared their testimonies about the two brothers. Both turned their thoughts to the Smiths’ sacrifice and their willingness to give of themselves and their lives to Jesus Christ’s gospel.

Elder LeGrand R. Curtis Jr., a General Authority Seventy and Church historian, analyzed the mark that Joseph Smith left, affecting generations to come. He noted that people have gotten to know Joseph Smith by different means. Some of these include Doctrine of Covenants and Pearl of Great Price study, reading Joseph Smith’s history in the Book of Mormon or reading and praying about the book itself, visiting historic Church sites, as well as through technology and more recent historical publications.

Elder Curtis said, “By the time Joseph was killed by mob violence in 1844, the everlasting gospel had been restored and was rolling forth across the earth.”

4. Face to face with history — the death masks of Joseph and Hyrum Smith

This article walks through the journey the death masks of the Prophet and his brother have taken. Shortly after the death of the two brothers, face masks were made to preserve a remembrance of the men, something commonly practiced at the time for people of importance.

The masks have proven to have a sense of sacredness about them. A scholar, who is not a member of the Church, is quoted as saying, “Wow, that’s like looking at the true cross of Jesus Christ.”

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, and his wife, Sister Kristen Oaks, shared a video on social media on May 18, inviting young adults to the worldwide devotional for young adults on Sunday, May 21.

On May 15, Sister Michelle D. Craig, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, noted that under President Nelson’s direction as Prophet, 133 temples have been or will be built. “He builds faith in Jesus Christ, testimony and spiritual capacity in those who choose to listen,” she said on Facebook.

In a BYU–Idaho devotional on Tuesday, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles announced a new president for the university. On social media on May 17, the Apostle shared some of his thoughts from and on the devotional and announcement.

On May 15, Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles testified that Heavenly Father wants families to be happy and to be forever. 6. Elder J. Kimo Esplin learned the gospel brings happiness, even amid tragedy

A few months after returning from his full-time mission, Elder Esplin, sustained last month as a General Authority Seventy, and his father were involved in a head-on collision, killing his father. Just a few months later, with his mother sitting beside him, his car was struck from behind by a car going more than 100 mph; his car rolled, and his mother and baby niece were killed.

Elder Esplin called that period a switch point in his life. “You start to take life a little more seriously.”

On Facebook, Sister Amy A. Wright, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, shared a video on May 8 of her future daughter-in-law singing at her master’s recital. “What a tender thing it is to ponder that a loving and living God would bless all of us with individual, unique, tailor-made gifts that enable us to be instruments in His hands as we lift, love and heal,” she wrote.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints notified local leaders to expect changes to the 2024 version of “Come, Follow Me,” including a single resource instead of separate manuals for Primary, Sunday School, Young Women classes and Aaronic Priesthood quorum meetings.

5. The untold story of the simple Richmond Virginia Temple groundbreaking — 3 years later

Under clear, blue skies on the morning of April 11, 2020, eight people quietly, respectfully and reverently gathered in a grove of trees in Glen Allen, Virginia, trying to avoid both curiosity and wariness.

They came together for a simple yet sacred groundbreaking ceremony for the Richmond Virginia Temple, which had been facilitated in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic by an earlier meeting between Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Virginia’s governor.

6. Temple in Canada to close this fall for renovations, Locations for 2 new temples released — 1 each in Scandinavia, West Africa

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that the Toronto Ontario Temple will close later this year for extended renovations.

The First Presidency also announced the locations for two new temples — the Kumasi Ghana Temple and the Oslo Norway Temple.

Less than six months ago, Joni Walton was asked to serve as the Primary music leader of the Inverness Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Syracuse, Utah.

Of course, Walton was willing to lead out during the children’s singing time, but she had a request.

On Facebook, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a video on May 3 of him speaking during an areawide broadcast in the Philippines. “As we make and keep sacred covenants in holy temples, the Savior abides in and walks with us,” he said.

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles testified of the Book of Mormon. “Continuously reading and studying this sublime book has strengthened my desire to live God’s commandments and has provided me with a strong testimony of the living reality of the Son of God,” he tweeted on May 4.

The Book of Mormon is internally consistent, beautifully written, and contains the answers to life’s great questions. It is another testament of Jesus Christ. It contains His commandments and gospel teachings.

With tears in his eyes, President Worthen stood as those gathered in the packed Marriott Center gave him an enthusiastic standing ovation.

7. Tabernacle Choir announces Mexico City concerts; travel to Mexico to be first of multiyear global tour

The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are going to Mexico City, Mexico, June 13-19 with concerts in the National Auditorium on June 17 and 18, the choir announced on Tuesday, April 25, on the Church’s Mexico Newsroom and ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Free tickets to the concerts will be distributed by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout Mexico City. The June 17 concert will also be nationally broadcast.

8. How the Church’s Military Advisory Committee is supporting service members and families worldwide

Established by the First Presidency during World War II, the Church’s Military Advisory Committee is dedicated to providing support and advocating for Latter-day Saint service members and their families worldwide. In coming years, the committee hopes to convey to more stake presidents and bishops the importance of developing relationships with military members and their families to participate in a special ministry.

9. God is ‘a source of truth that you can always trust,’ says president of BYU–Pathway

On Tuesday, April 25, President and Sister Ashton, taught about truth, at BYU–Pathway’s first devotional of the spring semester. Their messages centered on how to find truth in today’s confusing times.

On April 27, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles testified of gospel principles and truths. He tweeted, “Nowhere is the intelligent exercise of moral agency more important than in our own homes.”

Later, Elder Christofferson posted about speaking at BYU’s 2023 commencement exercises about choosing in harmony with moral truths.

Relief Society general President Camille N. Johnson shared simple truths from her three-year-old granddaughter. President Johnson wrote, “I have been strengthened to ‘still the enemy’ by focusing on the glorious plan of happiness made possible because Jesus loves me and you.”

On April 23, Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reflected on his time spent with missionaries recently in the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC). “Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ is more than just learning about Him,” he said. “It requires studying God’s words in the scriptures, acting in accordance with our faith, and following the Savior’s example. Learning and following go hand in hand.”

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted about his interaction with South Africa Deputy President, His Excellency Paul Mashatile. “The world needs answers to questions of everyday life and of eternal life to come,” he tweeted on April 25. “We all need to know of God’s abiding love for us.”

Elder Uchtdorf hadn’t been back to Cairo since the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and a coalition of Arab states until this past week, when a three-country Church assignment took him to Cairo and provided him a new look at the sprawling largest metro area on the African continent, estimated at over 22 million people.

2. Video: Elder Bednar on how temples change hearts

While speaking to the Church News about temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Bednar recalled leading tours during the Washington D.C. Temple open house last April.

3. Elder Rasband ministers in France, Germany and Armenia

While in France, Elder Rasband met with missionaries, members and the mayor of Le Chesnay, where the Paris France Temple is located, just outside Paris, and testified of the Book of Mormon.

He also ministered in Germany and visited Armenia, during the three-country European ministry that began in France.

4. St. George young adults ask, Elder and Sister Soares answer

When “Jesus Christ walks with us, He blesses us with His Spirit, helping us to see things clearly, and He fills us with His love.”

That’s the promise Elder Soares made to young adults during a devotional in St. George, Utah. In his message, he invited young adults to walk with the Savior in this life and shared possible ways to accomplish that. He and his wife, Sister Rosana Soares, answered a variety of questions, including on the topics of trials, doubts and forgiveness.

5. San Diego California Temple to close for renovations; dedication, open house dates set for Okinawa Japan Temple

In temple news during the week, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the San Diego California Temple — the Church’s 45th temple and operating since 1993 — will close in July 2023 for extensive renovations.

The First Presidency also announced a Nov. 12 dedication date for the Okinawa Japan Temple, making it the ninth temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints scheduled to be dedicated between now and the end of 2023.

6. Ensign College, BYU–Idaho presidents speak at spring semester opening devotionals

Ensign College President Kusch said at a campus devotional on Tuesday, April 18, that “as we consider our RSVP to the Savior’s invitation to come unto Him, I pray this day our response will be, ‘I’m all in!’”

In BYU–Idaho’s first devotional of the spring semester, BYU–Idaho President Henry J. Eyring shared President Spencer W. Kimball’s example of persistence despite challenges, during the semester’s opening devotional.

“As we press forward, trusting in our Savior’s redeeming love..., we will be prepared to receive all that our Heavenly Father has in store for us,” said President Eyring.

7. Episode 132: Church News Spanish translation coordinator Nadia Gavarret on the universal blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ

8. New Joseph Smith Papers volume shows ‘calm before the storm’ of 1844 martyrdom

“Documents, Vol. 14” was released on Monday, April 17, and is the 26th of 27 books in the Joseph Smith Papers series.

The new Joseph Smith Papers volume features 99 documents, including letters, deeds, accounts of discourses, minutes of meetings, memorials to the nation’s leaders, poems and other documents that showcase a tumultuous period in Joseph Smith’s life and illustrate a region on the brink of civil war.

9. Helping the homeless navigate to new opportunities in San Francisco area

A new facility to help the homeless near San Francisco, California, opened its doors on Tuesday, April 18, with the help of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Church and its members contributed financially and with service hours to prepare the 240-bed complex for people experiencing homelessness. The goal of the facility, called a navigation center, is to help people living on the streets to move indoors and transition to permanent housing options, according to LifeMoves, a nonprofit organization the Church partnered with for this project.

The following day, Elder Uchtdorf told more of his time with his wife visiting significant sites that represent the Savior’s ministry. “God promises us that we may always have His Spirit to be with us,” he wrote. “As we ask, seek, and knock, doors will be opened that will lead to His peace and joy.”

On Facebook, Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reflected on his and Sister Melanie Rasband’s recent ministry in Paris, France. “I testify to you that the Lord is in the details of our lives,” he said on April 17.

Again, Elder Rasband posted on Facebook on April 20 and told of his experience preparing hygiene kits with missionaries.

The next day, Elder Rasband posted about his time in Armenia. On Facebook, he wrote about a family he visited who exhibited faith in the Savior after a difficult hardship.

On April 17, Sister Michelle D. Craig, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, explained how she loves making lists and checking things off her lists. She said, on Facebook, “My lists can be a good thing, but I really want to be intentional about following impressions of the Spirit and allowing myself to feel from Him the peace that He wants to give me.”

The area presidency changes will become effective Aug. 1.

The Church has 23 administrative areas — six that cover the United States and Canada and the remaining 17 outside of those two North American countries.

Postponements and delays didn’t dampen the spirit of the Saturday, April 8, groundbreaking services for the Port Vila Vanuatu Temple, with leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined by the president and prime minister of the South Pacific island nation and other local dignitaries.

The doors to the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple opened both literally and figuratively Monday, April 10 — literally as leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted a media day at the start of the temple’s prolonged open-to-the-public period.

At the temple, the series of public tours began with the traditional “media day,” with the Church inviting members of news organizations to gather for an initial briefing with a handful of Church leaders and local Latter-day Saints living in the temple district. Then they tour inside the house of the Lord and then conduct interviews afterwards.

9. Episode 131: 10 international singers on performing with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square during general conference

For the first time in its 175-year history, participants living outside the United States joined the 360-voice Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square during the 193rd Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The singers, part of a pilot program for the choir, sang with the storied choir in the Saturday morning session and both Sunday sessions of general conference on April 1 and 2, 2023. The 10 singers from six countries — Brazil, Mexico, Ghana, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan — join this episode of the Church News podcast to report on their visit to Salt Lake City and their experiences of testifying of Christ through music.

10. Michigan tackle Andrew Gentry is playing college football while serving in a YSA bishopric

Many know the story of how Andrew Gentry went from serving a Latter-day Saint mission in Utah to playing college football at the University of Michigan.

What many may not know is while attending classes and playing for one of the top programs in the nation, the 6-foot-7, 312-pound sophomore is continuing to serve at a rigorous pace in his young single adult ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I’m the first counselor in the bishopric,” he said. “It keeps me busy.”

On April 13, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tweeted, “I was privileged to be the recipient of the Morehouse College inaugural Gandhi-King-Mandela Peace Prize this evening.” He shared part of the video message that was shared at the event, since he was not able to attend.

On Facebook, Sister J. Anette Dennis of the Relief Society general presidency wished all “a wonderful Easter weekend.” She bore her testimony of the Savior and wrote on April 9, “We should always remember Him; because of Him, there is always hope.”

Sister Tracy Y. Browning of the Primary general presidency reflected on Facebook on her recent ministering in Cabo Verde. “At Easter and every day, [Christ] lives and calls us to come and be bound to Him so that we may too be transformed,” she said on April 9. “So that the thorns of our lives can, through His Atonement, become a symbol of His glory.”

The Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints underscored Easter Sunday as “the most important religious observance for followers of Jesus Christ,” and the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ as “the most important and transcendent event ever recorded on earth.”

Sister Yee shared a personal experience experience during a Tuesday night devotional at the Provo MTC. Missionaries preparing to preach the gospel all over the world heard Sister Yee speak about gathering people to the gospel one by one and the importance of hearing the Spirit.

7. Brother Wilcox speaks at BYU–Idaho graduation and Elder McConkie at Ensign College commencement

Like Rafiki in “The Lion King” stirring the water and telling Simba to “look harder,” Brother Bradley R. Wilcox of the Young Men general presidency shared his hope on April 6 that BYU–Idaho graduates will remember who they are as children of God.

During Ensign College’s winter commencement on April 7,  Elder James W. McConkie III, General Authority Seventy, shared an observation, a story, some advice and a scripture.

8. Youth in South America strengthen testimonies as they participate in FSY

FSY conferences kicked off the year 2023 in the southern hemisphere, where the school breaks during the summer season allowed youth to participate in the weeklong event.

9. Latter-day Saint Church leaders offer testimonies and family discovery experiences

Members of the Church’s Temple and Family History Executive Council told personal family stories and explained why family history matters.

The Primary general president cited three examples in response to a question about how to help children feel enthusiasm for temple and family history work, while participating in a discussion panel at RootsTech with other Church leaders in the Family History Department on March 3.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released an exterior rendering of the Cody Wyoming Temple.

The First Presidency has announced groundbreaking dates for the Belo Horizonte Brazil Temple and the Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple and a rescheduled groundbreaking date for the Port Vila Vanuatu Temple, which was postponed after a pair of cyclones hit and damaged the Pacific island nation last month.

Also announced were the dedication and open house dates for the Bangkok Thailand Temple, not only the first temple in Thailand but the first for mainland Southeast Asia.

Since becoming President of the Church in January 2018, President Russell M. Nelson has announced locations for 118 temples, beginning with seven identified during the April 2018 general conference and on through the 18 locations announced in the concluding session of October 2022 general conference.

Believed to be the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world, it is also one of three that Church leaders authorized in 2018 to continue worldwide. Accompanying that announcement was a statement that said “the goal of every activity in the Church should be to increase faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and to share His gospel message throughout the world.”

“The Redeemer: An Easter Celebration” is a new Easter concert portraying the life and ministry of the Savior Jesus Christ through sacred music, inspired artwork, video scenes and scripture.

Sister Browning reflected on learnings from past general conferences. She posted again on Facebook, asking how others will prepare for general conference and invited all to watch.

Young Women General President Bonnie H. Cordon explained on Instagram that she was sad to part with the flowers her son had given her. “I’m grateful for men with good hearts, like my grown son who saw me and loved me,” she said. “The Savior’s love is one that blooms forever.”

On March 29, Brother Bradley R. Wilcox of the Young Men general presidency shared the personal experience of an individual who was a counselor at For the Strength of Youth (FSY). Brother Wilcox called FSY “a place of miracles.”

On Instagram on March 29, Sister Amy A. Wright of the Primary general presidency testified that President Russell M. Nelson is a prophet of God. She wrote, “Follow the prophet; He knows the way!”

Primary General President President Susan H. Porter expressed her gratitude for general conference on Facebook. On March 31, she said, “As the Tabernacle Choir sings and testimonies of the living Christ are declared, I feel like a sponge submerged in life-giving water, wanting to absorb the messages that a loving Heavenly Father has for me.”

Sister Michelle D. Craig of the Young Women general presidency posted on March 31 on Instagram. “While scholars search the past and scientists look for current facts, our prophets see around the corner,” she wrote. She invited all to watch general conference.
