News from the October 2026 general conference

Church President Dallin H. Oaks invited all to come unto Jesus Christ.

“We all have present or future concerns or struggles we are trying to overcome. These may include questions or doubts. Whatever they are, the way to overcome them is to get closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ,” he said during the Sunday morning session.

One new Area Seventy was announced and sustained during the general leadership session Thursday, Oct. 1.

Thirteen musicians from 13 countries and territories around the world joined The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as global members and sang during the Saturday morning and Sunday sessions.

There will be two sessions on Saturday, Oct. 3, and two on Sunday, Oct. 4.

What happened during the April 2026 general conference?

The April 2026 general conference, which was on Easter weekend, opened with a solemn assembly to sustain Church President Dallin H. Oaks; the First Presidency with President Henry B. Eyring as first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson as second counselor; and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Also, during the Saturday afternoon session, on April 4, eight new General Authority Seventies were sustained, and it was announced that seven General Authority Seventies would receive emeritus status on Aug. 1. A new Primary general presidency — President Rosemary K. Chibota and her counselors, Sister Nina M. Garfield and Sister Theresa A. Collins — was sustained and began serving on Aug. 1.

During the Thursday, April 2, leadership meeting, 91 new Area Seventies were announced and presented for sustaining vote, with 73 Area Seventies designated for release on or before Aug. 1.

Twelve singers from 10 countries and territories joined The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as global members to sing in the Saturday morning and Sunday morning and afternoon sessions.

After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in English in 1985, President Johnson earned a law degree in 1989. She practiced law for nearly 30 years as a partner in the Salt Lake law firm Snow, Christensen & Martineau, where she was firm president at the time of her call to the Primary general presidency.

President Johnson served as the Primary general president for a year before becoming Relief Society general president on Aug. 1, 2022. She and her husband also served as mission leaders of the Perú Arequipa Mission from 2016 to 2019.

Be grateful, develop a strong work ethic, be fair, be honest, and be kind in every circumstance and in each interaction.

“If you do, opportunities will present themselves to you. In other words, build the best product, and it will sell itself — build the best ‘you,’ and things will all work out,” Brother Wunderli, first counselor in the Young Men general presidency, assured Brigham Young University–Idaho graduates on Thursday, July 23.

Some 2,800 graduates and their friends and families gathered in the I–Center in Rexburg, Idaho, for the afternoon commencement.

In his address, Brother Wunderli encouraged this year’s cohort to develop a Christlike character.

“Wherever you land, the common denominator of your influence on others and on organizations will be your character. The responsibilities you will assume will be less important than your relationships with others and the character you develop,” Brother Wunderli told graduates.

He shared several things that matter in the process of developing Christlike character.

Words matter

As Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught in the April 2024 general conference that “words do matter,” Brother Wunderli told graduates.

Graduates can choose to use words that draw individuals closer to Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon prophet Lehi had a dream that teaches that it is by holding fast to Christ’s words that individuals are led to His love, Brother Wunderli noted.

“Our words reflect our true character. How blessed are we that because of the gift of agency and Christ’s Atonement, our character can change. We can develop a Christlike character. We can ‘act for [ourselves] and not ... be acted upon’ (2 Nephi 2:26).”

Focus matters

Brother Wunderli noted he has witnessed both great happiness and great sadness in both the wealthy and the poor.

The late President Russell M. Nelson taught: “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives. ... Joy comes from and because of Him. He is the source of all joy” (“Joy and Spiritual Survival,” October 2016 general conference).

Gratitude matters

One day as a young missionary walking the dusty streets of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Brother Wunderli and his companion watched a severely deformed young man descend from a bus and scoot himself on a makeshift skateboard. Across his back was a satchel containing a shoeshine brush, polish and a few rags, Brother Wunderli recalled.

This young man, Samuel, was 17 years old and one of 11 children. As he shined shoes, he smiled genuinely and expressed his gratitude at being able to contribute to his family’s needs.

“Samuel had found happiness in work despite near impossible circumstances,” said Brother Wunderli. “He taught me the power of gratitude — that an attitude of gratitude can transcend even the most challenging of circumstances.”

Pure intent matters

Brother Wunderli said he has learned that on the journey of becoming more like Christ, “our intent matters.”

In His Sermon on the Mount, the Savior taught, “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 6:1-2).

Brother Wunderli asked: “In our relations with others, do we share conversations with the intent to impress them or to bless them? Do we speak out of intent to bring comfort, encouragement and love to them or to seek praise and acceptance from them?”

In a letter to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul wrote: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

Righteous intent — born out of love for God and neighbor — is at the core of developing Christlike character, Brother Wunderli observed.

“If all our choices were to be motivated by a love for God and love for others rather than love for self, our intent would be pure, and our becoming would be aligned more deeply with the character of Christ,” he said.

In his brief remarks, BYU–Idaho President Alvin F. Meredith III reminded graduates that the mission of BYU–Idaho is to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, the Church and their communities.

“Beginning tomorrow for you, the mission of BYU–Idaho doesn’t end; it expands. Wherever you go, you’ll carry with you what you’ve learned here, and I hope who you became here,” said President Meredith.

News from the April 2026 general conference

The conference opened with a solemn assembly to sustain Church President Dallin H. Oaks; the First Presidency with President Henry B. Eyring as first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson as second counselor; and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The solemn assembly is done in only the first conference where a new president and prophet of the Church has been called, President Oaks said.

President Oaks had presided at the October 2025 general conference as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and was announced as the new President of the Church on Oct. 14, 2025, and First Presidency counselors were also named.

During his talk in the Sunday morning session, President Oaks invited all to be peacemakers.

“My brothers and sisters, as followers of Christ, let us follow Him by forgoing contention and by using the language and methods of peacemakers,” President Oaks declared. “In our families and other personal relationships, let us avoid what is harsh and hateful.”

Also, during the Saturday afternoon session, on April 4, eight new General Authority Seventies were sustained, and it was announced that seven General Authority Seventies would receive emeritus status on Aug. 1. A new Primary general presidency was sustained and will begin on Aug. 1.

What happened during the October 2025 general conference?

Church President Russell M. Nelson died on Sept. 27, 2025 — the weekend prior to the October 2025 general conference.

With the death of a President of the Church, the First Presidency is dissolved and the counselors return to their places in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Time between the death of the Church President and the reorganization of the First Presidency — generally after the prophet’s funeral — is called apostolic interregnum.

It was the first time in about 75 years that a Church president has died a few days before a general conference, said President Dallin H. Oaks, who presided at general conference as the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

He was announced as the new President of the Church on Oct. 14, 2025, and First Presidency counselors were also named — President Henry B. Eyring as first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson as second counselor.

During conference, 12 musicians from 10 countries around the world joined the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as global members. During the leadership meeting on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025, two new Area Seventies were announced and presented for a sustaining vote.

Elder Christian C. Chigbundu

Elder Christian C. Chigbundu recalls a challenging time serving as a bishop, learning to be a new father and furthering his career at the same time.

Adding to the busy schedule was his goal to receive a professional accountant certification, requiring him to attend lectures, mostly on weekends.

A boss said to him: “You will never qualify as a chartered accountant. Tell them to release you from this calling.”

Elder Chigbundu replied: “The Lord calls in my Church, and the Lord also releases. I will not go to the Lord and ask the Lord to release me.”

Eventually Elder Chigbundu did receive his certification, still serving as bishop. “I will continue to serve in any capacity He will call us to serve because He owns the work,” he said. “It’s a privilege.”

Elder Christian Chiemezuolam Chigbundu was born Nov. 12, 1974, in Ahiaba Okpuala, Nigeria, to Egwatu Stephen Chigbundu and Oluchi Eunice Nwannunu.

He married Felicia Mgbeodi Ugbor in Lagos, Nigeria, on Feb. 14, 2002. They’re parents to five children.

Elder Chigbundu is a graduate of accounting and finance with a master’s degree in marketing, postgraduate degree in international relations and advanced certificate in law. He has professional experience in finance, strategy implementation and mobility services and has served in executive leadership and on professional boards of many companies and organizations in Nigeria and Africa.

At the time of his call as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Chigbundu was serving as the Nigeria Enugu Mission president. He’s also served as Area Seventy, stake president and bishop.

Elder Matthew J. Eyring

Before being baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 8, Elder Matthew Johnson Eyring’s father sat down with him and asked, “Do you have faith in Jesus Christ?”

Young Matthew began to cry and responded, “I don’t know.”

At his father’s invitation, the two knelt on his bedroom floor. As they prayed, the Holy Ghost bore strong witness to Matthew that Jesus Christ is his Savior.

That experience was formative, said Elder Eyring, and created in him a desire to try to be close to the Savior the best he could.

The third son of President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, and the late Sister Kathleen Johnson Eyring, Elder Eyring described his childhood as “wonderful and loving and faith-filled.”

“Both of my parents,” he said, “set a pattern of joyfully serving, even in their young, busy years.”

Born in Palo Alto, California, on July 19, 1969, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Utah and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

He met Amy Rebecca Froerer on a blind date, and the two were married on Aug. 5, 1995, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have five children.

His diverse career has included positions in management consulting, medical technology and business innovation. Most recently, he has been vice president of career development at BYU–Pathway Worldwide.

He has served as an Area Seventy, mission presidency counselor, stake presidency counselor and bishop, and served in the Chile Santiago South Mission.

Elder Matthew J. Eyring, new General Authority Seventy, has been blessed by righteous mentors

Elder Hutch U. Fale

Elder Hutch U. Fale, newly sustained General Authority Seventy, recalls that from a young age — especially after a specific Primary lesson — “I’ve known that Heavenly Father is there, that He loves me, that He listens and that through my Savior, I can connect with Him.”

At the time of his call, Elder Fale was serving as an Area Seventy in the Utah Area. His previous Church service includes serving as stake president, high councilor, bishop, elders quorum president and Young Men president; he was also a full-time missionary in the Tonga Nuku‘alofa Mission.

Hutch ‘Unga Fale was born Aug. 22, 1979, in Provo, Utah, the second-oldest of the eight children of Tevita “Hutch” Fale and Kim Corinne Kimball. When he was 5 years old, his family moved to Muʻa, Tongatapu, in Tonga, and he grew up in the island nation’s ancient capital — his ancestors’ home for over a thousand years.

He received a joint Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from Brigham Young University–Hawaii in June 2002. In April 2006, he received a Master of Public Administration degree from Brigham Young University’s Romney Institute of Public Service and Ethics and a Juris Doctor from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. He is an attorney and partner in the law firm Avery Burdsal & Fale.

Elder Fale met Gaylene Rosarine Lilino from Suva, Fiji, while the two were students at BYU–Hawaii. After both served missions, they were married Dec. 27, 2002, in the Laie Hawaii Temple. They are the parents of five children.

How Elder Hutch U. Fale, new General Authority Seventy, feels blessed and mentored from opposite sides of the globe

Elder James O. Fantone

When Elder James O. Fantone was a teenager preparing to serve a mission, his bishop invited him to read the Book of Mormon. Elder Fantone had studied the Book of Mormon in seminary, learning doctrines and scriptures. Reading it daily and cover to cover became a foundational experience for him as his testimony deepened.

“I fell in love with the Book of Mormon as a young missionary, and it truly is another testament of Jesus Christ,” he said. “Every time we read the Book of Mormon, it will help us understand the Lord’s Atonement.”

James Gilwell Osorio Fantone was born in Manila, Philippines, on Feb. 11, 1972, to Jose Velasco Fantone and Angelita de Leon Fantone.

He married Cynthia Caseres Uy in the Manila Philippines Temple on Aug. 23, 1994. They are the parents of four children and live in Cebu City, Philippines.

Elder Fantone earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Rizal Technological University, studied at the University of the Philippines and completed an entrepreneurship boot camp program in Ateneo De Manila. He has worked in sales, leadership development and as a training and business consultant. The Fantones have also started and run their own businesses.

At the time of his call as a General Authority Seventy, he was serving as an Area Seventy in the Philippines Area. He has served as the Philippines Antipolo Mission president (2022-2025), stake presidency counselor, high councilor, stake Young Men presidency counselor, bishop and institute teacher, and served in the Philippines Cagayan de Oro Mission.

How Elder James O. Fantone, new General Authority Seventy, has seen the Lord guiding his life

Elder Kevin J. Hathaway

Elder Kevin James Hathaway has always loved Jesus Christ.

He says he doesn’t remember exactly when he developed that love, but from his earliest memories, it’s been in his heart. Now, as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Hathaway wants people to know of Christ’s love for them.

“This is a joyful, wonderful Church and gospel,” Elder Hathaway said. “The covenants that are available … bring joy into our lives.”

He also has a testimony of prophets and apostles. As a boy, he said, he cherished their teachings; today, he’s grateful for the opportunity to assist current Church leaders “in building the kingdom and [testifying] of my Savior.”

Elder Hathaway was born in Billings, Montana, on Feb. 28, 1975, to Mike and Lorraine Hathaway. He is the third of seven children and was raised in the Hamer, Idaho, area.

He served in the Russia St. Petersburg Mission from 1994 to 1996. Following his missionary service, he attended Brigham Young University, earning bachelor’s degrees in Russian and international law and diplomacy. He built careers in health care, real estate and construction.

While in school, Elder Hathaway met fellow student Kali Lewis, whom he married Oct. 25, 1997, in the Oakland California Temple. They are the parents of six children and have one grandchild.

Elder and Sister Hathaway currently serve as mission leaders over the Arkansas Bentonville Mission, with their service scheduled to conclude July 1. Elder Hathaway’s previous callings include bishop, stake president and Area Seventy.

Elder Kevin J. Hathaway on trusting and serving the Lord

Elder Thabo Lebethoa

Not long after he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Thabo Lebethoa secured a job at a prestigious investment bank with ambitious goals to climb the corporate ladder.

Despite his success, Elder Lebethoa soon felt he needed change and chose to leave. He was later offered employment with the Church.

But the job came with a significant salary decrease, which was concerning because his wife had stopped working to care for their newborn son.

After prayerful consideration, the couple felt that accepting the job was the right decision.

“Am I going to let the salary determine the decision? No, I am going to trust in the feelings of the Spirit,” he said. “I learned that the Lord is in the details of our lives.”

Thabo Kula James Lebethoa was born in Soweto, South Africa, on Sept. 3, 1975, to Holopi Simon Lebethoa and Hilda Magadi Lebethoa. He married Andronica Gadifele Matlapeng on Jan. 5, 2002, and they were sealed in the Johannesburg South Africa Temple on June 26, 2003. They are the parents of four children and live in Roodepoort, South Africa.

Elder Lebethoa earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of South Africa. He worked for the Church in welfare, self-reliance and religious education.

At the time of his General Authority Seventy calling, Elder Lebethoa was serving as a Sunday School teacher. He has served in several leadership positions, including Area Seventy, president of the South Africa Cape Town Mission, stake president and bishop.

Elder Jeremiah J. Morgan

In his career in law and public service, Elder Jeremiah J. Morgan regularly defended religious freedom and the doctrines in “The Family Proclamation.”

“We need young people who are willing and able to get involved and have their voices heard in sustaining what God has given.”

Until his call as a General Authority Seventy, Elder Morgan was chief deputy attorney general for the state of Missouri. His wife, Sister Rebecca Morgan, also left her company, where she has been a vice president.

Said Elder Morgan, “The Lord had called us, and we were willing to drop everything and follow.”

Jeremiah Joseph Morgan was born in Kettering, Ohio, on March 15, 1971, to Keith Alan Morgan and Susan Jane Morgan. He and his four older siblings were raised by their mother in Lamoni, Iowa, and then Independence, Missouri, in the RLDS church, now known as Community of Christ. Through some miraculous events and friends who shared the restored gospel with him, he was baptized at age 18.

Serving in the Micronesia Guam Mission a year later set him on a course to be “a relentless disciple of Jesus Christ.” He received degrees from the University of Central Missouri and Brigham Young University.

Elder and Sister Morgan have seen the Church grow in Missouri. While their five children were young, Elder Morgan served as stake president of the Liberty Missouri Stake. That stake has now become four stakes.

Other previous Church callings include Area Seventy, communication specialist, high councilor, bishop and branch president.

Elder Paul H. Sinclair

Elder Paul H. Sinclair has always had what he calls “a core faith.” Growing up, he would go to Mass at the Catholic parish behind his childhood home.

“I didn’t quite know what I was feeling, but I knew I was feeling something faithful,” he said.

His high school sweetheart, who would later become his wife, Mona Marie Hill, was raised in the Church and was instrumental in his eventual conversion.

While she attended Brigham Young University, she wrote to him about her transformational experience in a religion class, leading him to read the Book of Mormon, meet with missionaries and get baptized at age 19.

“We now have five kids and 15 grandchildren who are in covenant with us because missionaries were so willing and so open in sharing with me, including Mona,” he said.

Elder Sinclair said the gospel opened his eyes to “what was possible.”

“If you’ve got hope, all things are possible,” he said.

Elder Paul Harrison Sinclair was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on March 20, 1966, to parents Roland Sinclair and Rosalie Geurts. The Sinclairs were married in the Chicago Illinois Temple on April 30, 1987, and raised their family in Indiana.

Elder Sinclair earned degrees from Brigham Young University, Southern Illinois University and Gonzaga University. He has professional experience in law and organizational leadership.

Elder Sinclair is currently serving as president of the England London Mission. He is a former Area Seventy, stake president, bishop, high councilor and public affairs specialist.

He, along with other Church leaders, honors mothers and women all around the world. ‘Example of pure goodness’

Elder Gary E. Stevenson described his mother as an “example of pure goodness.” He said of her in an Ensign article: “Her expectations motivated me. Almost every action I made was measured against the thought, ‘I do not want to disappoint my mom.’” (See “Elder Gary E. Stevenson: An Understanding Heart,” Ensign, June 2016.)

Following an example

Elder Dale G. Renlund‘s mother, Mariana Andersson, was from Sweden. When she and Elder Renlund’s Finnish father, Mats Åke Renlund, decided to get married, they were determined to be married only in a temple. Following his parents’ example, Elder Renlund and Sister Ruth Renlund married in the temple. “Aside from the decision to be active in the Church, marrying Ruth has been the most amazing thing in my life,” Elder Renlund said in an interview with the Church News.

A love for people

Of his wife, Elder Gerrit W. Gong said to Church News, “Susan is an extraordinary person. ... I think it’s fair to say that some of the opportunities that we’ve had are because of her and her being willing to go and try new things and meet new people. I’m grateful for that. She goes everywhere and does everything. People love her, and she loves them.”

‘True hero and inspiration’

Of his wife and mother of their children, Elder Ulisses Soares said in an Ensign article of Sister Rosanna Soares, “She is the true hero and inspiration in our family. She’s loving, kind and patient with everybody. She unites our family, and she sees good in everyone. Faith and dedication

After being called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Patrick Kearon spoke about traveling to major cities across Eastern Europe as a General Authority Seventy. In Istanbul, Turkey, a city of many religions and cultures existing together, Elder Kearon and his wife, Sister Jennifer Kearon, met a woman who was “remarkable, resilient, strong, faithful, positive, can-do, amazing.” She rode a bus three hours just to attend Sunday worship services. Her faith and dedication — as well as the faith and dedication of other Latter-day Saint pioneers — inspired him, he told the Church News.

April 2026 general conference: 4 sessions and a solemn assembly over Easter weekend

Bishop Edgley was sustained as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric at the October 1992 general conference and later became the first counselor on Dec. 27, 1995, when the previous presiding bishop, Merrill J. Bateman, was called to serve as president of Brigham Young University.

Bishop Edgley served as second counselor to both Elder Robert D. Hales (1992-1994) and Elder Merrill J. Bateman (1994-1995). He then served as the first counselor to Presiding Bishop H. David Burton (1995-2012).

Bishop Edgley had been the managing director of the Church’s finance and records department and a vice president at General Mills. He also served on the boards of PacifiCorp, Utah Power, Deseret Mutual Benefit Association, Beneficial Life Insurance Co., Deseret Trust Co. and Bonneville Holding Co.

He was vice chairman of Proprietary Holding Inc. and served on Zions First National Bank’s trust policy committee.

Bishop Edgley was born on Feb. 6, 1936, in Preston, Idaho, to Phenoi and Ona Crockett Edgley. His family lived in downtown Preston, and much of his growing-up years revolved around sports and outdoor activities.

Bishop Edgley’s summers as a young man in Idaho often included farm activities like thinning beets, picking potatoes and hauling hay.

“Anyone who wanted work in Preston could find employment,” Bishop Edgley once told the Church News. “There was always plenty of work, and most people in the community did work. I always had the [family’s] dry cleaning plant to fall back on, but I didn’t particularly like the work so in the summer I would work outside.’’

He attended Brigham Young University on a football scholarship and while at BYU met his wife-to-be, Pauline Nielson. They married on Aug. 12, 1960, in the Salt Lake Temple and are the parents of six children.

He served in the Eastern States Mission in the late 1950s and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from BYU.

After receiving a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University, Bishop Edgley began a 19-year career with General Mills. The family lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Toronto, Ontario; and Lynnfield, Massachusetts. He rose to vice president of administration and control for consumer nonfoods operations.

During a meeting of General Mills executives one morning, Bishop Edgley received a phone call from then-Presiding Bishop Victor L. Brown, who asked Bishop Edgley to come to Salt Lake City for a discussion about heading the newly formed Church Records Department.

“I was so well locked in to General Mills, it was quite a shock when I told them I was leaving,” he once recalled.

He was responsible for Church finance and controllership functions, treasury services, risk management (insurance), tax reporting and membership and statistical records.

Bishop Edgley had also served as president of the Centerville Utah North Stake and previously served as a counselor in a stake presidency, high councilor, bishop and ward Young Men president.

In his October 2010 general conference message, he spoke about faith and choice.

“Faith is a choice, and it must be sought after and developed. Thus, we are responsible for our own faith,” he said. “We are also responsible for our lack of faith. The choice is yours.”

Bishop Edgley is survived by his wife, Pauline, and their daughters Stacey (Monte Fiala), Vickie Edgley, Christine (Ron Baird), Melanie (Tim Doane), and sons Steven (Jennilyn) and Mark (Katie); 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, his sister Kathy Fellows (Stan), and his in-laws Darlene Hurst, and Leon and Laraine Nielson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ona and Phenoi Edgley, his sisters and their respective spouses Grant and Lenona Hawkes, Stanton and Evelyn Nuffer, and Ben and Marcia Packer, his grandchildren David Heiner, Eliza Edgley, and his sons-in-law Steven Horne and Jeffrey Hansen.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Centerville North Stake Center, 1461 N. Main, Centerville, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday, April 3, 2026, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, Utah, and Monday morning from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the meetinghouse prior to the funeral. Bishop Edgley’s interment will take place in Preston, Idaho.

My dear brothers and sisters, there are some events that persist in almost everyone’s memory. If you were living at the time of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard that terrible news. The same is true of the shocking attacks on what we call 9/11. For Latter-day Saints who were adults at that time, the 1978 revelation on the priesthood was an event of such magnitude that it is also etched in memory.

The news reached me on a telephone that seldom rang. My two sons and I were working in the yard of a mountain home we built as a place of retreat from my heavy responsibilities as president of Brigham Young University. These sons were between missions. The oldest had returned three weeks earlier, and the youngest was preparing to leave a year later. The earth was caving onto our driveway from a steep slope, and we were trying to stabilize the hillside. We were in the midst of this project, shovels in hand, when the phone rang inside the house. I knew it must be important. Only a small number of people had that telephone number, and all of them had agreed not to call me about anything that could possibly wait.

The caller was Elder Boyd K. Packer. He told me about the revelation on the priesthood, which was just being announced. We exchanged expressions of joy, and I walked back to the hillside. I sat down on the pile of dirt we had been moving and beckoned to my sons. As I told them that all worthy male members of the Church could now be ordained to the priesthood, I wept for joy. That is the scene etched in my memory of this unforgettable announcement 40 years ago — sitting on a pile of dirt and weeping as I told my sons of this divine revelation.

Why was the revelation on the priesthood such an occasion of joy? As a young man studying and working in the legal profession, I lived in the Midwest and the East for 17 years. The restriction on the ordination and temple blessings of persons of African ancestry — almost invisible to me as I grew up in Utah — was a frequent subject of my conversations in my life in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

I observed the pain and frustration experienced by those who suffered these restrictions and those who criticized them and sought for reasons. I studied the reasons then being given and could not feel confirmation of the truth of any of them. As part of my prayerful study, I learned that, in general, the Lord rarely gives reasons for the commandments and directions He gives to His servants. I determined to be loyal to our prophetic leaders and to pray — as promised from the beginning of these restrictions — that the day would come when all would enjoy the blessings of priesthood and temple. Now, on June 8, 1978, that day had come, and I wept for joy. Many Latter-day Saints felt joy at this news. The numbers of valiant and faithful members of African descent who had accepted the gospel despite the restriction was then very small. Therefore, most of those who rejoiced were Anglo-Americans like me, who felt the pain of black brothers and sisters and longed for their relief. Among those who also wept for joy at the priesthood revelation were Dr. Russell M. Nelson and then-deputy commissioner of education Henry B. Eyring. In 1978, both of these men had lived outside the somewhat isolated environment of the Mountain West for more than a total of 40 years. They had also witnessed the pain of this restriction among their associates.

When we consider what has happened in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in the lives of its members since 1978, we all have cause for celebration.

Institutionally, the Church reacted swiftly to the revelation on the priesthood.

Ordinations and temple recommends came immediately. The reasons that had been given to try to explain the prior restrictions on members of African ancestry — even those previously voiced by revered Church leaders — were promptly and publicly disavowed. Institutional policies or practices that could have inhibited the full integration of members of African ancestry, such as the separate congregations common in many Christian churches, were prevented by the longstanding LDS policy of ward membership being determined geographically. Similarly, membership records continued to make no mention of race or ethnicity. The Lord had spoken through His prophet, and His Church obeyed.

In contrast, changes in the hearts and practices of individual members did not come suddenly and universally. Some accepted the effects of the revelation immediately and gracefully. Some accepted gradually. But some, in their personal lives, continued the attitudes of racism that have been painful to so many throughout the world, including the past 40 years. Others have wanted to look back, concentrating attention on re-examining the past, including seeking reasons for the now-outdated restrictions.

However, most in the Church, including its senior leadership, have concentrated on the opportunities of the future rather than the disappointments of the past. They have trusted the wisdom and timing of the Lord and accepted the directions of His prophet. In doing so, we have realized the eternal significance of God’s prophetic teaching that “one being is as precious in his sight as the other” (Jacob 2:21). In doing so, we have received new impetus to fulfill the command that we are to teach the everlasting gospel unto all — to “all nations, kindreds, tongues and people” (Doctrine and Covenants 42:58).

To concern ourselves with what has not been revealed or with past explanations by those who were operating with limited understanding can only result in speculation and frustration. To all who have such concerns, we extend our love and this special invitation. Let us all look forward in the unity of our faith and trust in the Lord’s promise that “he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female” (2 Nephi 26:33; emphasis added).

As we look to the future, one of the most important effects of the revelation on the priesthood is its divine call to abandon attitudes of prejudice against any group of God’s children. Racism is probably the most familiar source of prejudice today, and we are all called to repent of that. But throughout history, many groups of God’s children are or have been persecuted or disadvantaged by prejudices, such as those based on ethnicity or culture or nationality or education or economic circumstances.

As servants of God who have the knowledge and responsibilities of His great plan of salvation, we should hasten to prepare our attitudes and our actions — institutionally and personally — to abandon all personal prejudices. As President Russell M. Nelson said following our recent meeting with the national officers of the NAACP: “Together we invite all people, organizations and government[s] to work with greater civility, eliminating prejudice of all kinds.”

Even as we unite to abandon all attitudes and practices of prejudice, we should remember that it is not prejudice for the Church to insist on certain rules in furtherance of the Lord’s requirement of worthiness to enter a temple. The Lord has declared that obedience to covenants and commandments is an essential requirement to enjoy sacred blessings. Any attempt to erase divine requirements for eternal life and eternal families would be like trying to establish Satan’s plan that “all would be saved.” We mortals already rejected Satan’s plan in our premortal lives. We chose the plan of our Heavenly Father, which provides the freedom to choose and keep the eternal covenants and commandments that apply equally to all. The equality of God is not equal outcomes for all, but equal opportunity for all.

Our determination in this program is to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the revelation on the priesthood by looking forward. As we do, we express special appreciation for our marvelous members of African descent, especially our African American members who have persisted in faith and faithfulness through a difficult transition period of fading prejudice. Now we unite together in concentrating our attention on the glorious post-1978 effects of that revelation in blessing the children of God all over the world. As our prophetic leaders declared at that time:

“The Lord has now made known his will for the blessing of all his children throughout the earth who will hearken to the voice of his authorized servants, and prepare themselves to receive every blessing of the gospel.”

Now temples are being built in many nations for the blessing of God’s children on both sides of the veil. On earth and in heaven, we rejoice together. This is essential to our preparation for the Second Coming of Him who declared through a Book of Mormon prophet that “he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation” (2 Nephi 26:24) and who declared through a modern prophet that “if ye are not one ye are not mine” (Doctrine and Covenants 38:27).

We now invite you to join us in a program of messages and music that share the joy felt all over the world as more and more of God’s children enjoy the blessings of the gospel we celebrate! In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

October 2025 general conference — the Church’s 195th Semiannual General Conference — featured messages from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other Church leaders. The five general sessions were for all individuals, families and friends.

News from the October 2025 general conference

During his opening remarks, President Dallin H. Oaks, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, acknowledged the death of President Russell M. Nelson, 17th President of the Church, the week before on Saturday, Sept. 27, and stated that the conference will go forward “as planned and with speakers and music assigned by President Nelson after months of preparation.”

The only additions, said President Oaks, were his introductory explanation, which included a brief tribute, and his speaking in place of President Nelson in the closing session on Sunday afternoon.

With the death of a President of the Church, the First Presidency is dissolved and the counselors return to their places in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Time between the death of the the Church President and the reorganization of the First Presidency — generally after the prophet’s funeral — is called apostolic interregnum.

“This is the first time in about 75 years that a Church president has died a few days before a general conference,” President Oaks said.

During his remarks on Sunday afternoon, President Oaks spoke about the importance of the family. “The doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints centers on the family.”

During the leadership session on Thursday, Oct. 1, two new Area Seventies were announced and presented for a sustaining vote.

Twelve musicians from 10 countries around the world joined the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as global participants to sing in the Saturday morning and the Sunday morning and afternoon sessions.

What happened during the April 2025 general conference?

During the last session of the April 2025 general conference, President Nelson announced 15 new temple locations and people around the world reacted with excitement and joy.

During the Saturday morning session, members sustained 16 new General Authority Seventies, a new Young Men general presidency and changes in the Presidency of the Seventy. It was also announced that five General Authority Seventies would be given emeritus status on Aug. 1.

Twelve musicians from nine countries around the world joined the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square as global members to sing in the Saturday morning and the Sunday morning and afternoon sessions.

During the Thursday, April 3, leadership session, 78 new Area Seventies were sustained and with another 57 Area Seventies designated for release on or before Aug. 1.

President Russell M. Nelson died on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the age of 101. On Oct. 14, the Church announced that President Dallin H. Oaks had been set apart as the President of the Church and he introduced President Henry B. Eyring as first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson as second counselor in the new First Presidency. A new member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be announced at a future date.
