Joseph and Jan Cannon of the Church’s Geneva Office and humanitarian efforts began the program by welcoming all in attendance. They expressed appreciation for the diplomatic missions, NGOs and partners who have worked collaboratively to strengthen families, assist refugees and promote peace, according to the Europe Newsroom.

In attendance was Elder Rubén V. Alliaud, a General Authority Seventy and president of the Church’s Europe Central Area, and his wife, Sister Fabiana Alliaud. He delivered a keynote Light the World address:

“These dinners are a simple way to thank all the countries, people and organizations that unite to help those in need and bring light into their lives, following the example that Jesus Christ so well exemplified,” he said. “The Church is a global organization and is present in many countries. The help and humanitarian aid we provide each year is through organizations and good people in all those countries that can better identify real needs. Ambassadors and NGOs help bring light into the world, and this is what we celebrate tonight.”

Stefano Bosco, director of the Geneva Office, took a moment to discuss Geneva’s unique role as a center for dialogue and cooperation. He emphasized how the often unseen acts of service and coordination are essential for advancing humanitarian efforts. Christmas serves as a time to not only recognize these vital contributions but also to renew our commitment to helping others.

Ambassador Iván Emilio de Jesús Ogando Lora, a representative of the Dominican Republic, added to these remarks: “We see many things that are happening in the world, many people thinking about individualism. It’s about sharing. This season invites you to share. Dominican culture is mostly that.”

Part of the evening celebration featured cultural performances, showcasing the diversity and beauty of the global community represented in Geneva. Performers shared music and dance from their home countries.

Countries and groups who shared their talents included the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, the Samoan Pacific Youth Group, the Dominican Republic, Hungary’s L’Ensemble Pannonia and Danses Hongroises and Bojóca Band.

Ambassador Paul Empole Losoko Efambe, representating the Democratic Republic of the Congo, remarked, “Thank you for the demonstration of the lights of the world, the demonstration through the dance and the way we see the world together as a group, as a family.”

Elder Joep Boudeqign Boom, an Area Seventy in the Europe Central Area, said, “We’re all children of God. It doesn’t matter which country you’re from or which culture or what kind of food you eat or what dances you dance, we have a universal language of love and light.”

Each performance highlighted the traditions and spirit of a different region, uniting guests in appreciation for the cultures that enhance Geneva’s international landscape.

“I had not met the people before, but we met and talked and felt a connection,” said Elder Yves Weidmann, Area Seventy in the Europe Central Area. “That connection also comes because we’re brothers and sisters. It felt like the world came together.”

Ambassador Nella Pepe Tavita-Levy, a representative of the Independent State of Samoa, expressed that “Samoan culture is based on love, respect and humility. Samoa is a country founded on God, and we try to speak and live with love and respect and more importantly to have an attitude of service, to serve others.”

Throughout the evening, guests noted the warmth and fellowship that marked the gathering — an expression of the Christmas message of peace and goodwill. Many reflected on how Geneva’s progress in humanitarian action, diplomacy, and interfaith cooperation is made possible when individuals and institutions work together to support others.

The Christmas dinner served not only as a seasonal celebration but also as a recognition of the good accomplished throughout the year.

Church's humanitarian efforts sponsors its first UN conference hosted in Geneva

The member-driven effort, which began in 2018 within the boundaries of the Maryland Baltimore Mission, involves missionaries sending brief texts to ward council leaders and ward missionaries to update them on the work and encourage member involvement.

“I have such a strong testimony that this is an important plank on the bridge to better unity between missionaries and members. That’s the principle behind this. It’s not just about texts and updates and daily miracles, it’s about the relationships that fuel the Lord’s work,” said President Jason Wright, branch president of the Blue Ridge YSA Branch in Winchester, Virginia.

President Wright said the effort serves to invite the Spirit into the members’ homes, helps missionaries stay focused, encourages accountability and allows ward missionaries to learn the needs of others.

Chapter 13 of “Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ” and the General Handbook section 23.4 say coordination with local leaders “is essential to being united” in missionary efforts. The publications outline that ward mission leaders conduct weekly coordination meetings. Coordination can also happen in other ways during the week, including phone calls, texts and emails.

Mike Shake, a member of the Berryville Ward in the Winchester Virginia Stake, said of sharing the gospel: “This is the greatest work that is happening on the earth today, and the positive use of technology to help hasten the work along is a good thing.”

Impact on members

The Ohio Cincinnati Mission is another mission in the United States Northeast Area that now uses nightly messages to communicate with ward members as word has spread. Sister Haylee Marshall and Sister Jayla Jackson have experienced the positive impact this has had on their ward.

Sister Jackson said, “Members have more excitement for the work,” and they are “more anxiously engaged.”

Sister Marshall added that the friends they teach “have closer relationships with our members” and feel more included.

President Wright said, “We all serve in our own ways, and we are all instruments in the Lord’s hands, each bringing different interests, skills and spiritual gifts.” Each member has something to contribute to this great work.

Impact on friends

Elder Hyrum Nettles and Elder Joel Mack, also from the Ohio Cincinnati Mission, expressed the impact nightly texts have had on the friends they are teaching.

Elder Nettles said they had a ward member join a lesson who “was able to bear a powerful testimony to our friend,” and their friend “really felt the spirit.” The increased member participation results in deeper and long-lasting relationships between members and friends, he said.

Elder Mack added that “their relationship is a little more personal.”

This relationship is what supports friends in their journey in the gospel. They are more comfortable to ask questions, share their experiences and feel the spirit, explained Elder Mack.

Shake added, “It gives members opportunities to pray specifically for the friends the missionaries are working with,” and has paved the way for work among missionaries, friends and members to flourish.

Plus, the location for the future Yuma Arizona Temple was announced by the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and dedication and open house dates were announced for the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Provo Missionary Training Center’s 1,347 missionaries assembled some 500,000 meals for food pantries.

Sister Kristen M. Oaks, wife of Church President Dallin H. Oaks, joined this week’s Church News podcast to speak with guest host Sheri Dew, executive vice president of the Deseret Management Corp. and a former member of the Relief Society general presidency.

Generosity shines during BYU alumni service projects for away football games

On Sept. 22, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated bottled water to the Ministry of Education in El Salvador. This donation aided over 9,000 children and young adults in San Salvador’s public schools, helping to address the country’s ongoing clean water access crisis.

The Church states: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds water and sanitation systems and teaches communities hygiene and system maintenance, empowering them to meet their long-term water needs. Last year, the Church provided clean water to 593,025 people in 23 countries. People in 77 countries and territories have been helped since 2002.”

Carlos Mateo Figuereo, a member of the national communications council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in El Salvador, presented the donation to the Minister of Education, Capt. Karla Trigueros. Information about this event was first published in a Sept. 22 news release on the Church’s Spanish-language Newsroom.

Figuereo emphasized that the donation reflects the Latter-day Saints’ commitment to following Jesus Christ’s example of love and service to others.

Trigueros said: “This donation represents much more than words; it is a concrete action in response to this emergency. On behalf of our children and young students, who will be deeply grateful, and on behalf of the Ministry of Education, thank you for remembering them and for extending your support in this much-needed time.”

The school’s principal, Celeste Hernández, expressed her gratitude for the donation, stating, “In addition to the efforts of the Ministry of Education, today we received more than 1,400 bottles of water for our students to consume. Thanks to the Church of Jesus Christ. On behalf of our students, may God bless you as God has blessed us today with this water.”

The Ministry of Education will distribute the 48,000 units of purified water to over 20 public schools in the Salvadoran capital. The Church continues to donate clean water globally to provide relief to those in need.

Light the World

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites all to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ by sharing His light with others during the Christmas season through the Light the World initiative and through acts of kindness.

Members from the Rapid City stake accepted this invitation by creating a float to share the importance of Christ-like service in their community.

Creating the float

Jackie Killian, a member of the Canyon Lake Ward, was in charge of creating the float. Together, members gathered for meetings and fine-tuning the details to their project.

The YSAs met one night and “built the float in five and a half hours,” reported Killian.

A globe was suspended in the middle of the float, surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights. To enhance their message of kindness, those building the float included images of Christ and others engaged in acts of service around the globe.

Stacy Nehring, a member of the Mount Rushmore Ward, described features of the float. It displayed “big Light the World banners on each side that have a QR code,” allowing people to scan and visit the official Light the World website to learn more about the initiative.

Message of service

“Service big or small can help and it can change your life and can change your perspective,” Nehring said. “It brings you out of the dark and gives you that light and hope that you need.”

During the parade, missionaries set up hot chocolate to share with the community and answer questions about the Light the World float.

The community received the Light the World message of service and love well, as Killian explained. “People cheered us on throughout the parade,” embracing the spirit of “showing kindness to others and helping people out.”

What to know about Christmas at Temple Square this year

The High-Level International Conference of the Article 18 Alliance unfolded with a powerful keynote address from President Petr Pavel.

He stressed the importance of freedom of conscience, proclaiming, “Wherever the human spirit is controlled by power, freedom dies.” President Pavel emphasized that religion uplifts all people and that religious freedom must be actively protected, defended and practiced daily.

In attendance were leaders of governments, civil society and faith representatives, gathering to affirm the universal right to freedom of religion and belief.

Representing the Church were Elder James W. McConkie III, a General Authority Seventy and member of the Europe Central Area presidency, and Michal Hanzal, area public relations manager.

According to a Europe Newsroom report, their participation reaffirms the importance the Church places on religious freedom. The Church’s 11th Article of Faith declares:

“We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

The Article 18 Alliance upholds these same ideals. The Church united with global leaders to assert that everyone should have the right to worship freely, without fear or discrimination.

In his opening remarks, Pavel expressed how faith becomes a reservoir of courage and dignity, especially “in times of crises,” and reminded participants that “true religion is something that uplifts people — all people, not just some of them.”

He urged vigilance: “True freedom of religion means freedom from control. Religious freedom is never granted once and for all. It must therefore be protected, defended and lived every day. Let us never take it for granted. Let us have the courage to stand up for it — for ourselves and for those who cannot.”

Elder McConkie emphasized the significance of the event: “Throughout the conference, I reflected on the Lord’s reminder in Doctrine and Covenants 134:4 that government should ‘restrain crime, but never control conscience; should punish guilt, but never suppress the freedom of the soul,’ and how gratifying it was to be gathered in the heart of Europe with academic, government and faith leaders committed to these divine principles of truth and agency.”

Article 18 Alliance

According to the Czech Republic Newsroom, the Article 18 Alliance that organized the conference is a network of 38 member countries and dozens of experts united by the principles of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its mission is to protect religious minorities, combat discrimination and promote respect for freedom of religion or belief.

The Alliance’s Council of Experts, which includes Professor Brett Scharffs from Brigham Young University’s International Center for Law and Religion Studies, convened leading voices globally to guide and support its initiatives.

During the sessions and events, themes of dignity, solidarity and resilience were central. Delegates from around the world discussed peace building, social cohesion and the challenges faith communities face in conflict zones. Speakers included Nazila Ghanea, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief; Samuel Brownback, the former United States ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom; and others from across continents. A tribute was given to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his commitment to nonviolence and human dignity.

Recognition and honors

The opening-night dinner was held in the National Museum at Prague’s historic Wenceslas Square. Awards were presented to organizations and individuals who have built bridges across faiths and advocated for religious freedom, with Scharffs among the recipients.

Upon receiving the award, Scharffs remarked, “Resilience comes from working together — especially in times of darkness. When we join in commitment and cooperation, we generate hope and strength for those who suffer persecution.”

He was honored for his long-standing commitment to defending religious freedom.

Ambassador-at-large Robert Řehák, Chair of the Article 18 Alliance, said, “When we create genuine friendship and efficient cooperation, we can disarm hatred, we can overcome polarization and division. Together, we can transform the power of the powerless into a collective force for freedom of religion, mutual understanding and peace.”

Moving forward

Pavel gave valuable reminders: When men and women are free to seek God and serve their neighbors according to the dictates of their conscience, they become agents of hope. That is the kind of freedom this conference called participants to defend every day.

The conference concluded with a declaration emphasizing that in times of uncertainty, the rights to freedom of religion, conscience and thought are vital to human dignity and resilience.

The Church continues to affirm that religious freedom is not only a right to be claimed but a gift to be shared.

Czech Saints eagerly await a new stake center, a symbol of the good the Church does in the country

On Sept. 30, Church leaders, IRC officials, local government officials, community leaders and members gathered at an official handover ceremony, a celebration of the progress of the Buhara, Uganda, water supply project.

A $300,000 grant from the Church to the IRC in 2024 sparked crucial WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) infrastructure projects in Uganda’s Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts.

In Kabarole, the IRC and local government completed phases I and II of the Buhara water supply project, adding five public standpipes and 10 household connections by April 2025.

In Bunyangabu, sanitation facilities were built for Kibiito and Ruboona primary schools and Kabonero and Kibate health centers.

Church leaders in attendance were Elder Frederick Kamya, Area Seventy of the Africa Central Area; Denis Mukasa, the area’s regional humanitarian services manager; and Dinah Mbawaire, national director of communications.

At the event, Elder Kamya said: “The name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Jesus Christ, as head of the Church, taught during His time on earth that the new commandment I give you is to love one another. So, when we make our humble contribution, whatever it may be, it is an act of love. The second commandment He gave was to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is first and foremost about loving our neighbor.”

IRC Uganda was represented by Jane Nabunnya Mulumba, IRC Uganda country director; Wilbrord Turimaso, WASH program coordinator; Martin Watsisi, regional WASH consultant; and Ayoreka Mary Concepta, regional WASH manager.

Mulumba addressed the students and community and explained, “These latrines are not only a symbol of cleanliness and hygiene, they are also a symbol that encourages you to stay in school. Hygiene has always been a personal matter. You now have the necessary facilities. Stay clean, take a shower, take care of your uniforms, and stay in school. Use the latrines properly. Go home and teach your parents and family about cleanliness and hygiene.”

The chairman of the Kabarole District Local Government, Richard Rwabuhinga, commended the strong partnership between the district and the IRC in improving WASH services.

He estimated that since the framework plan’s launch in 2018, access to safe drinking water in the district had increased from 65% to 77% and could reach 80% after the Buhara water supply infrastructure is completed.

According to the Uganda Newsroom, Rwabuhinga also expressed his deep gratitude for the Church’s generous contribution, noting that they helped to accelerate the Buhara water supply project.

The ceremony began with a visit to the 80,000-liter reservoir located on Magunga Hill in Bwanika, then led to Rubona Primary School, where they were enthusiastically welcomed by children who performed traditional songs, dances and poems.

The Rubona Primary School has a very active WASH health club. Members of this club are known as the “WASH Angels.” They not only teach WASH principles at the school but also reach out to the community. They spread their message through music, dance and theater.

The school administration expressed its gratitude to the Church and the IRC for what it described as “a rescue from a very difficult situation.”

James Ategeka, chairman of Bunyangabu District, said: “In schools where water and sanitation facilities have been improved, enrollment has increased and academic performance has improved. Thank you very much for your excellent work and support for the people of Bunyangabu District.”

Motorized borehole increases water access in Uganda village

On Nov. 4, Church and government leaders convened in the Hall of Honor of the National Congress in Valparaíso, Chile, to extend and accept this honor, according to the Church’s Chile Newsroom.

In attendance were José Miguel Castro, president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, and Deputy Víctor Pino, a Latter-day Saint. They welcomed leaders from the Church, led by Elder Gabriel Campos, Area Seventy in the South America South Area, and his wife, Sister Ana Marina Briceño. Additional Church attendees included Silvia Garrido Marabolí, area organization adviser; Valentín Núñez, national director of the communications council; and Helgi Hukdhs Zerega, public affairs manager for Chile and Paraguay.

The day began with a greeting from the National Congress, Chile’s parliament which consists of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Castro opened his remarks by highlighting the Church’s contributions.

He said: “It has truly been a tremendous and very important visit, where we have been able to talk and share about the importance of the Church in our society, the importance of the Church in our country for continuing to strengthen values, for continuing to strengthen our youth and children, and for moving our country forward with the values ​​and the ideals of the Church. It is always important in that sense. I am very grateful for your presence today and for all the work you do, from Arica to Punta Arenas and especially in Antofagasta. Thank you very much for being with us.”

Luncheon with leaders

After the initial remarks, Castro and Pino hosted a luncheon in honor of the Church delegation in the presidential dining room.

During the meeting, Elder Campos shared the impact the Church has made over the past 100 years in South America, including contributions to education, humanitarian aid, family promotion and Christian values.

He stated: “We are very happy; today has been a historic day for the Church in Chile, where we had the opportunity to receive recognition from the president of the honorable Chamber of Deputies, in commemoration of 100 years of the preaching of the gospel in South America. With the delegation of Church members with whom we came today, we had the opportunity to be recognized by the full chamber in the Hall of Honor, and we were able to enjoy a beautiful day sharing our values, beliefs and common ground with the deputies who accompanied us.”

According to the Church’s Chile Newsroom, this visit sparked the interest of other members of parliament, who spontaneously approached to greet Elder Campos and his companions.

Symbolic ceremony and gifts of gratitude

In the chamber president’s office, a ceremony was held to present an award to the Church.

Pino addressed those in attendance:

“Today we had a wonderful experience at the Chamber of Deputies, where we welcomed representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were recognized by the chamber and by President José Miguel Castro for the Church’s 100 years in South America. As a member of the Church and as a deputy, it is essential to continue integrating our Church into the social sphere.”

He continued: “What better way to do so than with this recognition of the Church’s 100-year history in South America, providing welfare assistance, humanitarian aid and leadership? We hope that these kinds of activities will continue so that we can remain relevant actors in the various processes taking place in our country and throughout South America.” The Church’s efforts are a way to share the Savior’s example, he said.

Elder Campos expressed his gratitude for the ceremony and presented the representatives with a copy of the Book of Mormon, explaining its contents and its spiritual significance for members of the Church.

At the end of the ceremony, members of parliament and senators approached the delegation to congratulate and thank the Church for its work throughout the country, recognizing its commitment to the community and its contribution to the spiritual and social development of Chile.

Latter-day Saints help with Chile fire recovery

“When men and women are united in the cause of Christ, miracles happen,” she said Thursday, Sept. 18, during a devotional at the Nauvoo Mega Conference for Single Adults. Sister Wright is also a member of the Church’s Missionary Executive Council.

Single adults who are 31 and older participated in the four-day conference aiming to socialize, serve and grow spiritually in the historic setting, according to ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

“My dear friends, the greatest gift you can give to the world, your children, your family, your community, is to keep your covenants,” Sister Wright counseled the 300 single adults at the devotional. “If you want to successfully navigate the challenges of our day and be a light unto others — a light on a hill that cannot be hid — make and keep sacred covenants and follow the counsel of our living Prophet.”

The devotional kick-started several days filled with testimony-building opportunities, including community service, performances, activities and tours of the historic sites.

Elder Kirt L. Hodges, an Area Seventy assigned to preside over the conference, noted that the attendees “are just trying to figure out where Heavenly Father wants them to be. They work through trials and adversities, but they don’t lose their faith, and they continue to look to the Savior and know that He’s the answer.”

Early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began moving to Illinois, including Nauvoo, in 1839 after leaving Missouri. Nauvoo was the headquarters of the Church in the early 1840s. The rebuilt Nauvoo Illinois Temple was dedicated in 2002, and there are several restored or rebuilt homes and buildings there that share about the Church and the experiences of members at the time.

Service initiatives

On Saturday, Sept. 20, many conference participants braved the rainy afternoon to engage in community service activities in partnership with JustServe. This initiative offered a variety of projects tailored to different interests and skills.

Some participants traveled about 15 miles south and across the Mississippi River to Keokuk, Iowa, to volunteer at the Samuel F. Miller House and Museum, while others focused on environmental efforts by picking up debris along the banks of the river.

A group of volunteers worked to enhance the facilities at Camp Nauvoo, which is owned and operated by the Community of Christ. They spread rock under newly installed solar panels at the camp. In historic Nauvoo, additional volunteers contributed to similar landscaping efforts.

Other participants applied their creativity and crafting skills to benefit those in need. They made Christmas ornaments for individuals impacted by fire and crocheted soap sacks to assist the homeless community.

Personal testimonies

David Boice, a YouTube personality and recent convert, discussed his spiritual journey. “Jesus had my hand no matter what,” he said, which allowed him to accept the invitation to be baptized.

Many participants made strong friendships at the conference. Takao Miyazawa felt the conference provided a “chance to meet people of the same age.”

Anna Ismagilova called the conference four of the ”happiest, spiritual and unforgettable days.”

Liz Maughan said: “I don’t just come for the conference. I come to experience Nauvoo and the peace that is here. This year, I was not going to come, but then I felt like I needed to come. I’m here, and I’m not sure why, but I’m already loving being able to be away from the hustle and bustle of life.”

Centered on the theme “Continuing the Journey of Lifelong Discipleship,” this event served to bring joy and purpose to the lives of returned missionaries by deepening their conversion to Jesus Christ and His gospel.

The program included participating in temple ordinances, group discussions, dinner and a devotional by Elder Motoshige Karino, an Area Seventy in the Asia North Area, and his wife, Sister Mirei Karino.

In one discussion, returned missionaries connected by sharing memories of their time in the field, skills they developed and lessons they learned, reported the Church’s Japan Newsroom.

Another session focused on “life after the mission.” Attendees and leaders examined maintaining spiritual habits, goal setting, education and careers, and dating and marriage, better preparing them for the future.

The workshop addressed the challenges young adults face after returning from missions. It emphasized that even in the absence of many peers, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ would provide strength. Participants were encouraged to explore deeper communication with God through prayer.

The event was sponsored by the Institutes of Religion program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan.

Devotional by Elder and Sister Karino

“I try to be the same person whether I’m alone, with family and friends, at work or at church. Wherever I am, I am a child of God,” Elder Karino said as he described his efforts to integrate discipleship into his life.

Elder and Sister Karino shared their testimonies of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and encouraged participants to continue on their walk of lifelong discipleship.

Elder Karino referenced his experience of boxing in high school to illustrate what it means to follow Christ.

He said, “Just as following our trainers and incorporating their teachings help us to improve our skills as boxers, following Christ will help us to become more like Him.”

He went on to express his appreciation for missionary work and shared a story of Elder Larson, the missionary who taught his family over 45 years ago. He explained that it was the elder’s Christlike example of “looking after the one” that led to his family’s conversion and his gratitude.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the date for the annual Christmas devotional. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke to students around the world in a BYU-Pathway Worldwide devotional on Oct. 31 and to missionaries in the Provo Missionary Training Center on Nov. 4.

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke to the young adults of the Church in a broadcast devotional that aired to North and South America on Nov. 2, and Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited Kenya in October during a 10-day assignment in the Africa Central Area.

In temple news, the Burley Idaho Temple opened its doors for public tours, starting with a media day on Monday, Nov. 3.

Sister Amy A. Wright — first counselor in the Primary general presidency — emphasized the power of keeping sacred covenants during a devotional at a single adult conference in historic Nauvoo, Illinois. Elder Edward B. Rowe, a General Authority Seventy, addressed students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, on Nov. 4.

On Oct. 31, Elder Bednar spoke to students in the BYU-Pathway Worldwide program through a devotional broadcast. He spoke on the joy that the gospel of Jesus Christ brings.

Born March 15, 2005, twins Ruben and Samuel Paris are French natives who have dedicated their lives to sharing the message of Jesus Christ through their social media endeavors.

They got into social media with the intention to “build a strong community where everyone can feel inspired and included, no matter their past, no matter their background, by sharing peace and love with Christ at the center,” said Ruben Paris.

Raised by a Catholic father and a Muslim mother, the Paris brothers grew up in a family in Dijon, France, where religion was never imposed on them, yet they had a desire for truth. “We knew growing up that something was missing,” Samuel Paris said, adding that he began to question, “What’s the point of life?”

Their Instagram states: “We always felt a little different. We had two close friends, but most of the time, we never really fit in with the kids around us. On the outside, we were surrounded by people, but inside we often felt alone.” Growing up, other classmates lived lives that did not exemplify living the commandments. This added to their desire for clarity and belonging in a world of confusion and division.

Ruben Paris often prayed: “Lord, please bring back a gospel that makes sense. Please create a church that is true, that draws us closer to You. Please show us how those who have already passed away can still receive the blessings of salvation.”

It wasn’t until 2023 that he received an answer to his long-awaited prayer.

“We got an opportunity to play soccer for a school in Colorado,” he said. By the age of 18, the twins moved to the United States.

This decision changed their lives. When Ruben and Samuel Paris met Ryan Payne in Colorado, his distinct, radiant presence captivated them. As they spent time with him, they discovered that his inner light stemmed from his faith and membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This sparked a deep curiosity in the twins, prompting them to learn more.

Ruben Paris asked, “Why are you like that?” and Payne responded, “I’m like that because of Jesus Christ.” Payne explained that he was a member of the Church.

The Paris brothers began praying with Payne, attending church and learning more about the gospel. “We really felt that something was different. So he gave us a Book [of Mormon], and we started to read it. He introduced us to the missionaries,” Samuel Paris said.

Shortly after meeting with the missionaries, the twins decided to go to France to be baptized into the Church in front of friends and family. They were baptized on June 10, 2023.

In 2025, Ruben and Samuel Paris moved to Utah to attend Brigham Young University. They missed the sense of belonging they felt in the U.S. and “really felt that our place was here,” Samuel Paris said.

After moving to Utah, the twins continued to seek ways to deepen their faith journey and connect with others. During a trip to St. George, Utah, with friends, Ruben and Samuel Paris had a conversation with a friend’s father who encouraged them to “feed your sheep.” This inspired them to expand their influence by using social media to share the message of Jesus Christ with a broader audience.

Ruben Paris said, “We really love to explain why we follow Jesus Christ and why we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” Their social media content focuses on interviewing and asking others about their experiences and relationships with Jesus Christ.

On July 5 of this year, Ruben and Samuel Paris went through the temple to receive their endowment. “Jesus Christ wants us to come home. It’s very simple. I truly believe that in the temple, it’s the best place to really reach the voice of Jesus Christ and to really make more covenants with Him,” Samuel Paris said.

“When you see someone that is in need, when you see a community that is in need, we need to reach out,” said Matthew White, a member of the West Chester Ward in the Cincinnati Ohio North Stake. “As followers of Jesus Christ, we need to reach out, because that’s what he would do.”

At the 2019 NAACP convention, President Nelson said: ”As president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I pray that we may increasingly call each other dear friends. May we go forward doing our best to exemplify the two great commandments — to love God and love each of his children. Arm in arm and shoulder to shoulder, may we strive to lift our brothers and sisters everywhere, in every way we can. This world will never be the same.”

Inspired by this call to serve, White joined his local NAACP chapter that year and immediately got to work. He played a pivotal role in forming a relationship between the Cincinnati NAACP and all the Cincinnati stakes that resulted in the donation of hundreds of coats to local schools and children in need.

White explained, “They didn’t have jackets. They didn’t have gloves. That’s not right.” His active involvement helped build bridges between the Church and the NAACP, highlighting mutual goals of service and community support.

The collaboration has been well-received, fostering a relationship characterized by love, friendship and understanding. Local media have covered his efforts, emphasizing broader social impact.

White said: “I see them smiling, laughing. I actually helped the kids put their jacket on and make sure it fits well,” underscoring the direct, personal influence of these donations.

On Oct. 4, White received the Cincinnati NAACP 2025 Individual Community Outreach and Partnership Award. While he never sought recognition for his service, he wanted the Church to be recognized rather than himself. He accepted the honor at the 2025 NAACP Freedom Fund Award Ceremony in front of an audience of about 900 people.

White’s efforts have not only provided assistance to those in need but have also fostered collaborative relationships aimed at community outreach, all rooted in the example set by President Nelson’s call to action.

President Nelson taught, “We are all connected, and we have a God-given responsibility to help make life better for those around us.”

Said White: “It’s a good feeling to have done something to help my brothers and sisters. That’s what it’s all about: fulfilling our responsibility to serve others and help make their life a little easier.”

Church, NAACP help youth connect to Black history through Freedom School

The booth offered visitors the chance to dive into their family history, exploring roots and family trees in an accessible and unique way. This celebration highlighted not only the excitement surrounding the new temple but also the importance of genealogical work.

Elder Mark A. Bragg, General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Family History Department and FamilySearch, said, “It is a miracle to have a house of the Lord in Bahía Blanca. Today we all feel that emotion, but we must not let it become commonplace. We must nurture the temples with the names of our ancestors, especially with the help of young people, who are the key to connecting temple work with future generations.”

Throughout the week, FamilySearch volunteers assisted the public by helping them create their family tree in just a few minutes, print it and take home a copy with the names of their ancestors, reported the Church’s Argentina Newsroom.

Pablo Schpilman, FamilySearch communications manager in the South America South Area, explained the goal of the event: “We are here at the Bahía Blanca Plaza Shopping Center helping people create their family tree and find the origin and meaning of their last name, completely free of charge. In about 20 minutes, each visitor can take home a printed part of their family history.”

Visitors as well as the volunteers were able to connect with their ancestors and understand the value of genealogy through this experience.

Among the volunteers at the booth was Erik Soza, who said, “At first, I thought genealogy might seem boring, but I discovered that people are excited to learn about their ancestors. Many were moved to tears when talking about their families. Seeing how moved they are by the realization that their family ties can be eternal is a very special experience.”

The mission of FamilySearch is to bring joy to all who participate in discovering and connecting to their family.

Elder Bragg said, “Every time we bring an ancestor’s name into the temple, we take another step toward fulfilling the divine purpose of reuniting God’s entire family.”

The FamilySearch booth at the Bahía Blanca Plaza Shopping Center not only offered a glimpse into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ teachings on eternal families but also inspired meaningful connections, as visitors discovered the personal joy of linking past and present generations within their own family trees.

The donation went to the NutriSalud project, an initiative aimed at enhancing the nutritional health of around 3,000 individuals. The primary focus is on children, single mothers and older adults, impacting roughly 500 families, according to the Church’s Mexico Newsroom.

“This collaboration represents tangible hope for many families facing difficult living conditions,” said Martha Calderón, president of the Muuchi Xiimbal A.C. Foundation.

The project helped deliver 1,500 food parcels and 3,000 spirulina supplements, a protein-rich, easily digestible superfood ideal for malnourished children. Nutrition education workshops and self-employment initiatives will also be promoted to strengthen family finances, vital for sustainable development.

Calderón said, “Thanks to the support of the Church of Jesus Christ, we will be able to prevent irreversible damage to the physical and cognitive development of hundreds of children.”

The Newsroom report explained the purpose of the Muuchi Xiimbal Foundation: “The foundation created a system to provide them with the necessary tools to improve their quality of life in the social, economic and nutritional needs for families in the area. Its objective is that the solution to economic and social vulnerability arises from the community itself, involving the population in its own development.”

“Child malnutrition has irreversible consequences on children’s brain development, growth, resistance to diseases and school achievement,” Newsroom noted, underscoring the project’s importance.

Since 2012, the Church has worked in collaboration with the foundation in states across the country, including similar projects in the state of Mexico. Its support continues to aid those in vulnerable conditions and reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development worldwide.

Through this ongoing collaboration, the foundation has expanded its initiatives to include comprehensive nutrition education and economic empowerment programs, fostering a culture of self-sufficiency and resilience in communities.

“Today we draw closer to God and unite with our families and ancestors through this work of love,” said Gerardo Moran, from the Sonsonate El Salvador Stake.

Elder Patricio M. Giuffra, General Authority Seventy and president of the Central America Area, encouraged attendees to increase their temple visits with an inspiring call:

“If you were one of those who came to the temple once a year, now come every six months. If you came every six months, then come every three months. If you came every three months, then come every month. If you came once a month, then come every week. And if you come every week, then see how you can adjust your time so that you can come whenever possible,” he said.

This temple gathering strengthened the testimonies of the attendees as they renewed their commitment to Jesus Christ. The young adults testified of the power of the temple to unite generations and give purpose to their lives, reported the Church’s Honduras Newsroom.

The El Salvador Newsroom reported that 400 young single adult members assembled at the San Salvador El Salvador Temple in effort to “Go Up to the Mountain of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:3). This theme emphasized the importance of family history, staying on the covenant path and temple attendance.

Ricardo Rivas, a regional family history and temple advisory leader, labeled this family history activity as a success and noted the youths’ participation in FamilySearch name submission marathons and temple ordinances for their ancestors.

Diego Alexander, from the Apopa El Salvador Stake, commented: “I’m very happy to see other friends who, after participating in a FamilySearch marathon, attended the temple today to perform the ordinances. This was a very nice activity.”

Some sacrifices were made from the young adults to be able to participate in this spiritual activity.

“We traveled from the western part of the country, and in this activity, we once again learned the importance in our lives of attending the temple and living out the covenants we make, as young people, with Heavenly Father,” said Gabriela Morales of the Atiquizaya El Salvador Stake.

Reyna Urrutia of the San Salvador El Salvador Soyapango Stake summarized her experience and shared the impact on her testimony: “I really enjoyed this activity, spending time with other YSA members. Attending the temple helps us strengthen our testimony of this gospel and brings us closer to our ancestors as we work on family history.”

On the same day, more than 800 young single adults gathered in the Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple. They participated in ordinances and held workshops focused on family history, blessings from the temple, and mental health challenges.

Zulma Sevellon, of Siguatepeque, shared her spiritual experience traveling with other young people from her city to participate in this temple activity: “For me, it was a very special experience to feel closer to my ancestors. They’re still alive… Today I was able to connect with my friends and also with my ancestors by doing work for them in the temple.”

Church members in Latin America make unexpected connections and feel God’s love through family history

The focus of this conference was “Hitherto hath the Lord helped us” (1 Samuel 7:12). Speakers and devotionals centered around the theme to look unto Christ.

Attendees came from 38 stakes from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the United States, Australia and South Africa. The event was hosted by the Huddersfield England Stake at Giggleswick School. The first day consisted of registration, a BBQ and games.

President Justin L. McKeown, first counselor in the Huddersfield stake presidency, said, “It is so important to gather in faith and friendship. Many can feel isolated at school or work where membership in the Church or personal values can be very sensitive. They need to feel the freedom and safety of peers who believe and are striving to keep covenants.”

On the second day of the event, young adults attended workshops and a variety of activities including football, tennis, volleyball and art. In the evening, a live jazz band and DJ provided music for a 1920s-themed dance.

Raffi Leece attended the event and said, “It has been one of the highlights of my year. I was so glad to be involved in planning it, and to see it come to fruition was amazing. I love that the Church gives us so many brilliant opportunities, both to grow and develop, but also to have fun and make new friendships.”

Elder Alan T. Phillips, General Authority Seventy and second counselor in the Church’s Europe North Area, attended Sunday’s meetings.

The Huddersfield stake Facebook page noted the highlight of the weekend was “sacrament meeting in Giggleswick School chapel, a Grade II listed building renowned for its copper dome, Italianate decoration, Argentine cedar pews and angel mosaics. More important was the Spirit that filled the chapel as the sacrament was passed, enhanced by the solo singing of Calli Bridgstock and talks by Jacob Buchanan and Emma Bridgstock,” before Elder Phillips offered inspired remarks, according to the Facebook page.

Later that evening, President Sam Bridgstock, president of the Huddersfield England Stake, conducted a devotional and addressed the young adults on courage and bravery. Elder Phillips, who presided at the event, answered questions from attendees.

Jacob Buchanan, a young adult, said, “I enjoyed the time I spent at the Big Yorkshire Weekend. It was a great opportunity to spend time with friends, meet new people and feel the Spirit.”

The last day of The Big Yorkshire Weekend was a big send-off and “school sports day: egg-and-spoon races, spacehoppers, piggyback sprints, tug-of-war and a visit from an ice cream van,” said the Huddersfield stake Facebook page.

The goal of the weekend was to strengthen faith and create friendships, President McKeown said.

“We were thrilled that several young adults spontaneously described the experience as ‘like FSY for young adults.’ That’s what we were intending.”

After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in English in 1985, President Johnson earned a law degree in 1989. She practiced law for nearly 30 years as a partner in the Salt Lake law firm Snow, Christensen & Martineau, where she was firm president at the time of her call to the Primary general presidency.

President Johnson served as the Primary general president for a year before becoming Relief Society general president on Aug. 1, 2022. She and her husband also served as mission leaders of the Perú Arequipa Mission from 2016 to 2019.

President Johnson speaks at women’s conference in Thailand and sees humanitarian efforts in Nepal, Sri Lanka

This national honor, awarded by the Congress of the Republic of Colombia, acknowledges individuals or organizations that promote peace, freedom and the well-being of society. Plinio E. Ordoñez Villamizar, chancellor of the order, recalled that the distinction draws inspiration from Simón Bolívar’s words to the first Congress in 1821: “Colombians, only talent, courage and virtue will be crowned.”

The ceremony took place in the historic Elliptical Hall of Congress and was presented by Congresswoman Betsy Pérez Arango. Information about this event was first published in a July 25 news release on the Church’s Colombia Newsroom.

Representing the Church was Elder Juan Pablo Villar, a General Authority Seventy and then second counselor in the South America Northwest Area presidency. He was joined by Elder Yan Carlos Vega, who served as an Area Seventy until August, to accept the insignia and diploma on behalf of the Church.

In her remarks, Rep. Pérez Arango emphasized: “This recognition of the Church of Jesus Christ stems from appreciation for its vocation of service. One does not serve to receive praise but because it is an act of faith and love. The best way to serve the Lord is to serve your brothers and sisters.”

Elder Villar responded: “We are very grateful and humbled to receive this recognition from such an honorable institution as the Congress, which represents all citizens of this great nation. As members of the Church, we follow the example of Jesus Christ by helping those most in need.”

He added: “The Lord Jesus Christ extended His hand to comfort and heal. That is what we seek to do. This distinction motivates us to continue holding hands and easing burdens.”

Elder Vega echoed these sentiments: “It has been a wonderful experience for the Church to receive the Commander’s Cross in recognition of all the humanitarian aid it provides in our country and around the world. The Church does not seek this type of recognition but feels deeply honored by this important distinction. This motivates us to be more Christian, more kind, more charitable and to follow the example of the Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Elder Villar also noted the Church’s collaborative approach: “We know we can achieve much more when we serve together.”

The Church’s presence and impact in Colombia continue to grow. Today, it includes over 217,000 members and 260 congregations, along with more than 150 humanitarian aid projects completed across the country.

This decoration stands as a powerful reminder that more than five decades of spiritual, social and humanitarian work by the Church in Colombia have left a lasting mark, the Church’s release said.
