  • While giving a sermon to the people of Gideon, Alma the Younger used the word “dilemma” (Alma 7:3, 18). The footnote leads to James 1:8. This “dilemma” could be “double-mindedness.”
  • A double-minded person is one who is wavering, indecisive or conflicted, someone who lacks commitment to a single purpose or belief. One way to overcome this is through learning to put God first.
  • Adam and Eve offered the firstlings of their flock in similitude of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Offering the firstlings is one way they put God first.
  • As a young married father, Elder Becerra fell behind in tithing payments. After pondering what he could do, he determined to try selling his car, the only thing of value he owned. He calculated how much he needed to pay off the car loan and his tithing. The buyer of the car was willing to pay the exact amount. A friend called and asked if Elder Becerra would like his car.
  • His mother testified of tithing powerfully during a home evening lesson, despite financial setbacks.
  • President Gordon B. Hinckley said in October 2001 that obedience to the commandment of God matters. This applies both temporally and spiritually.
  • Elder David A. Bednar said honoring the law of tithing allows spiritual illumination in one’s life. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of putting God first.

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, posted a reel on April 16 about prayer.

“The feelings of your heart and the love for our Heavenly Father and for His Beloved Son can be so constant that your prayers will ascend always,” he said.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, posted a reel on April 14 about the new Temple Square Visitors’ Center open house.

“The openness of this visitors’ center will show you how temples look inside,” he said.

In a post on the Young Women Worldwide account on April 14, Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman also shared her thoughts on the Temple Square Visitors’ Center open house.

President Freeman said the temple is a place “where we learn to live holy, to become more like our Savior and to learn how to live as lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on April 12 about his grandson Paxton, who was born with a rare chromosomal deletion. Elder Rasband testified of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the joy that comes through having that knowledge.

“I know Paxton’s tender ‘spirit and [his] body shall be reunited again in … perfect form’ (Alma 11:43). By the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, his joy will be in not only a resurrected body but one that is resurrected whole and perfect,” he said.

In a post from the Relief Society Worldwide account on April 12, the Relief Society general presidency — President Camille N. Johnson; Sister J. Anette Dennis, first counselor; and Sister Kristin M. Yee, second counselor — responded to comments left on social media after the recent Relief Society Worldwide Devotional.

“It’s been delightful to hear what you’ve learned and what the Spirit taught you,” said President Johnson, addressing members of the Relief Society.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on April 15 inviting viewers to watch the worldwide young adult devotional being broadcast on May 3. He and his wife, Sister Lesa Stevenson, will be talking about lifelong discipleship.

“As we live in this world of shifting values and beliefs, becoming a lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ will anchor us to the truth,” he said.

Speaking with a Primary child who had invited a friend to church, Primary General President Susan H. Porter shared that Primary children are “some of the best” missionaries in an April 15 post on the Primary Worldwide account.

“They form friendships and, with their warmth, invite people to learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ in natural ways.”

Elder Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on April 16 about a woman he met while on a ministering visit. He shared how after 30 years away from the Church, she chose to come back.

“Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling all of us home,” he said.

Sister Tamara W. Runia, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, shared quotes and clips from her April 7 address to BYU-Pathway students in an April 14 post.

Even when praying for days, months and years, not all circumstances have changed or become easier, but “I have seen miracles,” she said.

The Young Men general presidency — President Timothy L. Farnes; Brother David J. Wunderli, first counselor; and Brother Sean R. Dixon, second counselor — shared a livestream post on April 14 discussing the new “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet.

“It’s a guide helping you know how to make your own decisions … that’s a reflection of how much Heavenly Father loves you,” said Brother Wunderli.

]]><![CDATA[How Young Women classes will be structured during shorter, 25-minute classes]]>https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2026/04/09/how-young-wome-classes-structured-during-shorter-25-minute-classes/https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2026/04/09/how-young-wome-classes-structured-during-shorter-25-minute-classes/Fri, 10 Apr 2026 00:19:12 +0000During a video April 7 on the Young Women Worldwide social media account, the Young Women general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints answered questions on how class meetings will work with changes starting in September to Sunday meeting schedules.

Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman said the youth will be studying doctrine during their quorum and class meetings outlined in the updated “For the Strength of Youth” guide. Their scriptural study from “Come, Follow Me” will still happen at home, during Sunday School and in seminary.

Young Women class topics for each month will correspond to one of the 12 chapters in the new guide.

Sister Tamara W. Runia, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, discussed the four outcomes hoped for after a girl has spent six years in the Young Women program.

First-Sunday lesson

Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, second counselor in the Young Women general presidency, said first-Sunday lessons will start with a focus on one of the eternal truths listed in that month’s chapter. As outlined in a special magazine issue — which will be available both in print and digitally — specifically designed to help with these lessons, leaders will choose a corresponding scripture and personal spiritual experience with that truth to share with the youth. Sister Spannaus said the discussion on that item ends with the leader testifying of that eternal truth.

“It’s not so much instruction as it is a discussion or a conversation,” President Freeman said. Classes may choose who — an adult, an adult with a young woman or just a young woman — to lead the discussion.

President Freeman said this new way of doing class meetings is meant to replicate morning discussions from FSY camps where youth ask “real questions and they have real conversations.” It is meant to be a safe place for young women to ask questions and discuss in their classes.

Sister Runia emphasized opening the scriptures in the first five minutes of the discussion. She shared an experience the presidency had with President Dallin H. Oaks when the curriculum was being approved. Beginning with the doctrine could mean starting the class meeting by saying, “I love you.”

Quoting President Oaks, Sister Runia said: “Yes, we teach the doctrine. In fact, you could start the lesson by saying, ‘I love you.’ That is His doctrine.”

Second- and third-Sunday lessons

Sister Runia said the second- and third-Sunday meetings will focus on principles and doctrines from the chapter in each month’s outline. She said the magazine contains questions that can be answered during the discussion time. There will also be resources to help leaders prepare for answering the questions.

President Freeman said that the Gospel Topics tab on the Gospel Library app is a great resource for preparing for these lessons.

The general presidency shared that the Young Women theme will not be recited on Sundays. Instead, the theme can be said during weekly activities, Young Women camps, conferences and FSY. Opening exercises will be disbanded. An opening prayer will be said, and then the scriptures opened within five minutes of class beginning. Weekly activities will remain the same.

Fourth-Sunday lesson

The fourth-Sunday lesson will be “when we study what it means to live as a covenant daughter of God,” President Freeman said. “This is where we talk about identity and purpose and place in God’s plan.”

She said that the young women will recite the first line of the Young Women theme and then read a corresponding statement. Each month will have a new statement. The classes will then study a story of a woman in the scriptures who exemplifies that principle.

When there are only three Sundays for class time, such as in April because of general conference, President Freeman said the second- and third-Sunday lessons can be combined. She emphasized that the first- and last-Sunday lessons should always take place during the month.

The presidency closed by saying that over the summer all youth will participate in a read-a-thon of the new “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet. President Freeman said the plan for this read-a-thon will be released in a few weeks on the Gospel Library app under Gospel Study Plans.

President Dallin H. Oaks, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, posted on April 4 about the significance of a solemn assembly. He shared that this event happens only when a new president and prophet has been set apart.

“I am grateful to be among those whose callings are formally recognized in this way and appreciate your participation in this significant occasion,” he said.

‘Love even your enemies,’ President Oaks says during April 2026 general conference

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, posted April 4 about prayer and peace. He testified that Jesus Christ knows each of us.

“As we pray continually, no matter the circumstances of life, the Lord will offer us His peace and abiding support. Consistent prayer during joyous times and also during seasons of distress and grief will surely be rewarded according to His will and perfect timing,” he said.

President D. Todd Christofferson, second counselor in the First Presidency, posted April 5 about the character of Christ and how to develop it.

“Christlike character grows out of a Christlike heart,” he said. “Thus, if we are to succeed in developing a Christlike character, we must possess His motivations — His thoughts, desires, and intents of the heart. For us, it will require what the scriptures call a ‘mighty change of heart.’”

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, posted April 5 about each person’s experience of encountering the empty tomb.

“We must encounter the empty tomb, experience the reality of what it means and, in turn, share that witness with others,” he said.

“The scriptural phrase ‘endure to the end’ is a repeated reminder of the mighty spiritual change in our hearts that should be ongoing throughout our lives; it also is His promise of what we may become if we truly are possessed of the pure love of Christ,” he said.

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted April 5 about the sealing power restored to the earth by the prophet Elijah.

“I promise to you on this Easter day that as you adhere to His ordinances, covenants and commandments, you will grow closer in your relationship with our Savior, as well as your appreciation and gratitude for the sealing keys that have been restored in this dispensation,” he said.

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted April 5 about the blessings of an eternal marriage.

“With faith in Jesus Christ and devotion to your covenants with God and with each other, I promise you your marriage in this life and the next will become more glorious, more beautiful, more heavenly, more wondrous, more filled with an eternal love we can only now begin to comprehend,” he said.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted April 5 about the reality of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection.

“Those glorious words ‘He is risen’ have sparked religious ceremony, gratitude, faith in Jesus Christ and His promises for centuries,” he said.

President D. Todd Christofferson, second counselor in the First Presidency, announced that seven General Authority Seventies will be given emeritus status on Aug. 1. Additionally, eight new General Authority Seventies were called and a new Primary General Presidency was announced, effective Aug. 1.

The session was conducted by Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder Scott D. Whiting, General Authority Seventy, and Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, second counselor in the Young Women general presidency, gave the opening and closing prayers.

Music was provided by a combined choir from Brigham Young University–Idaho; they were directed by Atina Coates, Eda Ashby, Paul Busselberg and Randall Kempton, and accompanied by organists Linda Margetts and Joseph Peeples.

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 29 about his experience looking for references to the Savior’s Resurrection in the scriptures. He invited viewers to do the same.

“In this special and sacred Easter season, I joyfully declare my witness that Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of the Eternal Father. He lives. He is risen,” he said.

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on April 2 sharing about the Savior’s charge to “love one another,” given during the Last Supper. He expressed that this commandment given by Jesus Christ before His suffering in Garden of Gethsemane requires obedience.

“We manifest our love for God when we keep His commandments and serve His children. We don’t fully comprehend the Atonement, but we can spend our lives trying to be more loving and kind, regardless of the adversity we face,” he said.

Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson highlighted her insights from her Eurasian ministry viewing khachkars, ornate stone crosses decorated with fruit and flowers, in this March 31 post.

“What a beautiful reminder that Jesus Christ’s crucifixion did not mark the end. It was just the beginning,” she said.

President Johnson sees ‘tenacious faithfulness’ of Latter-day Saints in Eurasia

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on March 31 testifying of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

“As one of His ordained Apostles, I have experienced the spiritual and personal moments that have brought to me a sure and certain witness that Jesus Christ lives,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of the closing days of Holy Week, Primary General President Susan H. Porter noted the love Christ gave through His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, Crucifixion and Resurrection in this post from April 1.

“On Sunday morning, He rose as a resurrected, glorified being with the greatest joy the world has ever known. He did this out of His love for us,” she said.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 29 describing how on Palm Sunday nearly 2,000 years ago, people celebrated the Savior’s entry into Jerusalem with palms.

Quoting Revelation 7:9, he said, “Though we do not stand at the gates of Jerusalem today with palms in our hands, the time will come when a great multitude from ‘all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, [will stand] before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.’”

Elder Rasband posted again on March 30 sharing about the miracle of Christ’s Resurrection.

Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on April 2 about the question in John 20:15 that angels, and later the Savior, asked Mary upon her returning to the tomb; “Why weepest thou?” He explained how this same question is extended to viewers during the Easter season.

“I pray that you will find in your faith the light, the love, and the joy that He would have all of us feel at this sacred time of year,” he said.

In an April 1 post, Sister J. Anette Dennis , first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, shared from her April 2026 Liahona magazine remarks expounding on John 15:13 about practicing the Savior’s “greater love.”

“He voluntarily laid down His life for each of us and, in so doing, demonstrated infinite love,” she wrote.

Elder Gérald Caussé of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 31 talking about a new hymn recently released called “Long Ago, Within a Garden.” He said that the hymn talks about three gardens, the Garden of Eden, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Garden of the Empty Tomb.

Sister Amy A. Wright, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, relayed an experience she shared with a friend who attended a Church meeting for the first time in this March 31 post.

Sister Wright was surprised by her friend’s wonder and testified, “Jesus Christ lives, and He is coming again. This changes everything.”

In a March 28 post, Sister Tracy Y. Browning, second counselor in the Primary general presidency, sat with two Primary children to talk about their thoughts on the upcoming general conference. “Even as a young disciple of Jesus Christ, you can prepare to listen to the words of prophets and apostles, knowing the Lord has a message waiting for you.”

In another post shared on April 2, Sister Browning shared her testimony of Jesus Christ and how the Easter season brings her a “renewed gratitude” for Him.

Brother Gabriel W. Reid, second counselor in the Sunday School general presidency, shared his testimony of Christ’s presence in the temple in a March 30 post on the Sunday School’s Gospel Learning and Teaching account.

“I’ve found the temple to be a place to step away from the noise of the world and draw closer to Him,” he wrote.

The event highlighted the service they provide to those around them.

Rabbi Silvina Chemen from the Bet El Community; Cecilia Blanco de Di Lascio, a member of the Focolare Movement of the Catholic Church; and Sümeyra Nur Korkut, executive director of the Alba Intercultural Dialogue Center, received the awards on March 19.

According to the Church’s Argentina Newsroom, each is united under the same purpose of bringing communities together through faith, service and interacting with one another.

During the event, Rabbi Chemen spoke about light.

“It takes a lot of effort to darken a room: closing windows, turning off lights, covering every space. But to illuminate it, a small flame is enough,” she said.

She invited listeners to reflect on society today.

“We have been led to believe that darkness triumphs over light. But we are here to testify, time and time again, that light is not a utopia or an isolated religious discourse. It is a responsibility,” she said.

Rabbi Chemen talked about how values of justice, love, compassion and peace need to be shared with everyone, especially those who need a reason to keep moving forward.

Blanco discussed the important role women play in social transformation. With her experience in social work, she added her perspective on how this happens.

“We thought we were building houses … but we realized we were building homes,” she said.

She also highlighted that love is an essential quality.

“Love is what sees something great in the small. It is what recognizes the invisible and turns it into hope.”

Korkut shared thoughts on light and how it relates to people of all faiths.

“In Islam, we believe that light comes from God. We are not the source; we are instruments of that light.” She continued, “That light translates into acts of love, mercy and service to others. To illuminate is to live in such a way that this light is shared.”

Jorgelina Benavidez, an area organization adviser in the Church’s South America South Area, provided opening remarks for the recognition ceremony.

She said, “Every woman, from her own place, has the ability to influence, uplift and transform those around her.”

Others present at the event included representatives from the Secretariat of Religious Affairs of the Nation and the City, diplomatic authorities, leaders and members of different religious denominations and representatives from academic and social spheres. They expressed how the event was important in strengthening dialogue and coexistence between different religions and backgrounds.

Chile

Latter-day Saints in Chile held a similar recognition ceremony in March, celebrating the contributions of Judith Marín, the minister of Women and Gender Equity in Chile, for her commitment to public service throughout her career, according to the Church’s Chile Newsroom.

Kiribati is an country comprised of small islands and atolls in the central Pacific Ocean.

Partnered with the Kiribati government, the Church worked to install these plants over the past year, with five more coming in the next phase, according to the Church’s New Zealand Newsroom.

Before the desalination plant was installed on the atoll of Abatiku, residents used freshwater wells that were contaminated with sea water. Children would miss school because they were sick from drinking the water, said Tokabeti Teaeki, a school teacher for 7- and 8-year-old children on Abatiku.

“Now it’s so much better. The children play and drink and drink and drink the fresh water all the time. They just turn it on, and it’s there. It’s such a big blessing,” Teaeki said.

Another school teacher, Arati Raoboia, expressed her gratitude for the clean water.

“The water is delicious — it’s like the water we had to buy in the store for our little ones. If we gave them the well water, they would get sick. But now this fresh water is free,” Raoboia said.

The atoll also had huge tanks to collect rainwater. However, the tanks were often dry and empty.

Avia Teruruai is the caretaker for the desalination plant on Abatiku. He volunteers his time to ensure the clean water continues to flow.

“I do this because I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is what we do to care for our neighbors,” Teruruai said.

The solar-powered desalination plant is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Church and the Kiribati government to provide clean water to drought-affected areas, according to the Church’s Caring for Those in Need 2025 Summary. The Church sponsors efforts worldwide to provide clean water to those in need and worked with other organizations on 227 WASH (an acronym for water, sanitation and hygiene) projects in 2025.

Worldwide Efforts

The Caring Report outlined other places the Church has helped to provide clean water.

In the village of Villa de Santa Ana Nichi, Mexico, the sustainable drinking water system benefits 2,500 in neighborhoods, schools and a hospital. The system includes a long-term maintenance effort to ensure it continues to provide clean water for years to come.

Donations by the Church were made to a UNICEF program to provide safe water and sanitation facilities to schools across the state of Chihuahua. The efforts will help more than 1,000 students and teachers in rural and indigenous communities.

Another area that received clean water facilities was a village in Bolivia. In connection with supporting education, the Church worked with the Water for People organization to install bathrooms, hand-washing stations and safe drinking water stations at a local school. This effort has helped the school children have the opportunity to focus more on their education rather than hauling water before school from the river.

In northern Tanzania, the Church collaborated with WaterAid to provide more than 20,000 people with clean water through sanitation facilities in schools and health centers. The impact of these efforts allows women to feel safer in child birth and ensures they no longer have to fetch water from far away.

The Church helped other areas in Africa, such as Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia and South Africa, according to the Caring Report.

In Asia, the Church responded to a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hitting Myanmar and affecting thousands of people. The Church donated to international humanitarian centers to provide sanitation and hand-washing facilities along with hygiene kits for those affected. The facilities helped prevent disease from spreading and gave those affected a sense of security and safety.

The Church worked with the Samoan Ministry of Health and the Vaisigano Second District to provide clean water to 2,000 residents. They installed two 10,000-liter water tanks for a school and distributed over 200 water tanks to households.

After flooding affected the Greek islands in Europe, the Church worked with a mainland supplier to provide bottled water for those affected.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, posted a reel on March 14 about the symbolism of being baptized and then going to the temple to make further covenants.

“In the 19th century, early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Laie, Hawaii, were baptized at this beach. Years later, the Laie Hawaii Temple was built just a few hundred yards directly in front of this beach,” he said in the post.

President Uchtdorf posted another reel on March 15 with the Sunday School’s Gospel Learning and Teaching account highlighting the story of Joseph, who was sold into Egypt, covered in "Come, Follow Me" for this week.

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 15, talking to women in the Church about the impact they have.

“Dear sisters, please do not underestimate the power and impact of your capable, loving and sensitive influence on those with whom you associate,” he said.

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 13, sharing that he would be posting videos from his ministry in the Pacific Islands.

“I invite you to follow along over the next several days on my social media accounts as I share insights from friends and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who I am meeting on my assignment to the Pacific,” he said.

Later in the week, Elder Andersen posted videos of conversations he had about the Lord’s hastening work in Papua New Guinea, the growth of the Church in Australia, what it’s like to be on assignment, a father and son’s experiences and the overall growth of the Church in the Pacific Area.

Members of the Relief Society general presidency all shared messages from the recent Relief Society worldwide devotional in social media posts this week.

Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson posted a recap in this March 17 post, expressing love and support for the women of the Church.

“I know that life is hard. You can do hard with Jesus, or you can do it alone. That is your choice. But when you do hard with Jesus Christ, the hard becomes holy,” she said.

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 18 about a young man’s experience deciding to serve a mission.

The books were donated to three Utah organizations: Foster Care of Utah, Little Lambs of Utah and United Way.

The drive was held from Aug. 1 through Sept. 6, 2025. The Primary met together after the drive to clean and organize the books for donation. The Valiant classes then delivered the books.

Claudia Hales, coordinator at the United Way Community Center in American Fork, Utah, said she was grateful for the books the Primary donated.

“This was a very, absolutely thoughtful opportunity for us to be the recipients of those books that have been a blessing. They are well appreciated. They are essential for our children in our center [and] in our community,” Hales said.

Hales described how reading opens new avenues for children to learn, grow and discover the world around them.

One blessing from having the donated books has been “the smiles that the children have when they receive a book and, of course, the smiles of the moms. They become so excited to explore a new book [and] read a new book,” Hales said.

Hales shared that it was an unexpected blessing to receive the donation from the Primary.

Katie Applegate, a member of the Valiant Primary classes, said, “It made me feel really happy that other people could have books so I could share my love of reading.”

“I feel happy and really excited because it was my first service project,” Lydia said.

The ward Primary service project follows the invitation given by the Primary general presidency — President Susan H. Porter; Sister Amy A. Wright, first counselor; and Sister Tracy Y. Browning, second counselor — in January 2025, for Primary children worldwide to hold annual service activities.

The General Handbook, section 12.2.1.3, says:

“Primary presidencies may also organize an annual community service activity. Where possible, this activity focuses on serving children. Valiant-age children can help plan it. The activity provides children an opportunity to invite friends and ward members to join in community service.”

It continues the presidency’s ongoing discussion of chapters in the “For the Strength of Youth” guide. This time, they talked about what they learned from chapter five, titled “Your body is sacred.”

Two weeks earlier, the couple had gotten engaged. Wedding planning was underway amidst the hassle of a new semester beginning. The couple planned to be married in August 2025.

Israel Garcia arrived at work on April 30, ready to help move a few steel beams that had been incorrectly placed in the manufacturing engineering lab stock room at BYU–I. He had worked as a teaching assistant for a few years, helping students learn more about using the machinery.

During the moving process, 900 pounds of metal fell on top of him. Immediately knocked unconscious, he received fractures to his face, skull and shoulders. The accident nearly severed his brain stem.

“He was pretty messed up,” Sariah Garcia said.

She explained that there were three levels of damage that a person’s brain stem could receive without being completely severed. Israel Garcia’s injuries were level three.

“It was so severely damaged that essentially it was just hanging on by a thread,” she said.

He also suffered severe brain damage from his brain hitting his skull. Small connections in the brain that help a person to eat, speak and walk, were broken. Sariah Garcia said that she and other family members were repeatedly told that if Israel Garcia were to wake up he would “be a vegetable.”

Carol Garcia, his mother, received a phone call that morning from an unknown number. She typically doesn’t answer unknown calls but felt that she needed to answer this one.

“They said, ‘Hey, your son has been in an accident,’” Carol Garcia said. “I was like, ‘How bad could it be?’”

She said that it wasn’t until the caller identified himself as Nick Rammell, BYU–Idaho’s dean of students, that she understood how badly her son was hurt. She and one of her daughters immediately drove to the hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho, followed closely by his fiancée, who had also been notified.

Sariah Garcia said that monitors showed Israel Garcia didn’t have any brain activity, though his heart was still pumping. The outcome appeared bleak. The family had a difficult decision to make.

“Do we try to wait for him to wake up? But then what would his quality of life be? Or should we just pull the plug and let him go peacefully,” she said.

Carol Garcia said that many people came and visited them in the hospital, sharing how sorry they were that her son was dead. But she knew that it wasn’t over. Through many priesthood blessings and spiritual impressions, Carol, and other family members, knew that her son would survive.

After only five days in a coma, Israel Garcia woke up.

Sariah Garcia said she had felt impressed to go wedding dress shopping that morning. As an act of faith that her fiancé would be alright, she found a dress and bought it.

“As [my mom] was swiping the card to pay for my dress, I got a phone call that Israel had woken up and that he was taking commands,” she said. “If they told him to wiggle his finger, he could wiggle his finger.”

He spent about a month at the ICU in Idaho Falls, Idaho before being transferred to a hospital in Salt Lake City for physical, occupational and speech therapy and rehab.

Israel Garcia recalls feeling he had two important reasons to live.

“The first was to glorify God and testify of modern-day miracles. And the second was to get married to my wife,” he said.

The couple has a saying now to always “bring your umbrella.” Israel Garcia explained that if you pray for rain, you need to take an umbrella as a sign to God that you know He will make it rain. The umbrella represents the faith you have that God will provide answers and miracles.

On Aug. 8, 2025, Sariah and Israel Garciawere married in the Provo City Center Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, three months and one week after his accident.

Nearly a year after the accident, Israel Garcia still uses a walker to move around but has made milestone improvements with the help of doctors, therapists and the faith and prayers of loved ones.

“Any opportunity we’re given, we testify that God is a God of miracles, 100%,” Sariah Garcia said.

Reflecting on the past few months, Carol Garcia said her son is a modern-day Lazarus, referring to the man Jesus raised from the dead in the New Testament (John 11:1-45)

“I believe that when you are able to keep your covenants that you can go forward with confidence to ask God for what you need,” she said.

Carol Garcia said the Lord loves effort, and when one is doing one’s best to put in that effort, that person can have confidence in asking Heavenly Father to intervene. She also acknowledged that sometimes miracles and answers to prayers come on His time, not the individual’s. To her, the miracle in those moments is continuing to have faith in Jesus Christ.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said in his April 2021 general conference talk, “Many of you have witnessed miracles, more than you realize. They may seem small in comparison to Jesus raising the dead. But the magnitude does not distinguish a miracle, only that it came from God.”

Israel and Sariah Garcia hope that through their modern-day miracle, others can know that Heavenly Father still performs miracles today, even for ordinary people.

“We’re just ordinary people. We are the most normal people you would ever meet, but something so amazing happened in our lives,” Sariah Garcia said. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, if you are keeping your covenants and you have faith in the Lord then He will perform miracles in your life.”

Her hope was to share the real experiences of those there.

Her moment came when the Filipina broadcast journalist and her videographer decided to go to a city being demined. Moments after an ambulance drove away carrying a deceased miner, another land mine went off.

“You know how in the movies the explosions come in waves, in heat waves? That is so true because I felt so hot on one side of my face, and I actually saw the waves,” Soho said during a virtual keynote address for RootsTech 2026, which was released in February in advance of the March 5-7 event.

She described it as being an “ordinary news day for a journalist, probably.”

Soho is from the Philippines. At age 8, her mother died, leaving just her dad to raise her. She remembers him always watching the TV news, which became a big reason for why she became a journalist. She attended a Catholic school, where she learned to read well due to how many prayers were said each day as part of the school schedule.

“It was prayers that have sustained me, because I’ve had a lot of dangerous assignments. Had I not learned how to be prayerful enough in life, I don’t know if I’d still be here,” Soho said.

She said that journalists are the ones who tell the story and experience exactly how it happened, without any bias, just the truth. It is a privilege to have a front-row view of history, she added.

“We’re the storytellers; we are not the story,” Soho said.

Using the FamilySearch Family History Discover Experience, Soho learned that some of her family members held significant government positions. Her great-uncle, Alipio Aspiras, and his wife, Carlota Selga, were given honorific titles in their burial records.

“We’re rich; I can afford to retire,” Soho said with a laugh.

The Family History Discover Experience also showed Soho’s parents’ marriage record and other family documents. Soho had done some of her own family history previously, but she had not seen those records before.

“I just want to be known as someone who told good stories and tried to be a good person,” Soho said. “That’s enough. That’s enough for me.”

The brothers have won national titles and other awards.

“I think that’s something that has kept Matthew and I so close together was that all of our challenges that we got to go through, whether it was in competition or in training to be lead dancers, we got to do it together, and we were never competing against each other,” Michael Gardiner said during a virtual keynote address for RootsTech 2026.

Traveling back to Galway, Ireland, the brothers met up with their parents and learned how deeply rooted their heritage is in Irish culture.

“Living in America, I think you hold on to your roots more. We’re very proud of being Irish dancers,” Matthew Gardiner said.

Through the FamilySearch Family History Discover Experience, they traveled to Poulacapple, Ireland, where they learned more about their third-great-grandfather Edmond Gardiner. Standing in front of the home where he lived, Matthew Gardiner read, “Your family’s ties to these fields stretch back to at least the 1840s, when Edmond Gardiner, your third-great-grandfather, worked this land during the great famine from 1845-1852.”

The next stop on the brothers’ family history tour was Callan, Ireland, to learn more about their great-grandfather John “Jack” Gardiner. He moved to the town at the age of 24 and purchased Steppes Pub. The brothers visited the pub and saw old photographs of Jack Gardiner.

The impact of Jack Gardiner was greater than they had previously known. A photo of their great-grandfather’s obituary illustrated his impact on the people of the town. The headline read “The King of Callan is dead.” Matthew and Michael’s father commented that Jack Gardiner was very good-natured.

“He worked hard to preserve the Irish culture, sports, including Irish dance, and bring people in the community together,” Matthew Gardiner read from the Family History Discover Experience.

The brothers completed their discovery experience by visiting the grave site for Jack Gardiner and other family members.

Todd Christofferson, second counselor in the First Presidency, posted a reel on March 1. In the video, he was asked about loving and serving even when there is so much hurt in the world.

“No effort is wasted in trying to do good to others. No effort is wasted in loving and serving,” he said.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, posted a reel on Feb. 28 asking students at BYU–Hawaii what they are grateful for.

In another reel posted on March 1, President Uchtdorf shared how the Polynesian Cultural Center helps students attending BYU–Hawaii remember and preserve their cultural identity and their identity as children of God.

He posted a reel on March 2 from a devotional address he gave on March 1, sharing that when those listening feel discouraged or inadequate at what the Lord asks of them, they need to remember to put their trust in Him.

“Through Jesus Christ, we will be able to become our best selves and accomplish the work God wants us to do.”

President Uchtdorf invites dedication to the cause of Christ

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 2 saying that being consistent with family prayer and scripture study is what will make the most difference for children. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

“If you feel discouraged in your efforts to hold family prayer or study the scriptures together, remember this: Power comes through consistency — not perfection.”

Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson shared on the Relief Society Worldwide account on March 5 how the organization is meant to bring temporal and spiritual relief to sisters.

“Sometimes we’re the givers of relief, and we’re not as inclined to accept relief. But I know, sisters, that as we have the opportunity to both give and receive relief, we will feel the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Upcoming Relief Society worldwide devotional to be unifying, uplifting experience

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 5 of his remarks about faith in an August 2025 devotional.

“Developing faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing we can learn to do in this lifetime,” he wrote alongside the video.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 3 sharing how he and Sister Rasband would lead the Family Discovery Day broadcast this Saturday, March 7, in connection with RootsTech 2026. They will be sharing a message of united families for eternity.

“Thanks to our Heavenly Father’s great plan of happiness, our families can be sealed together forever,” he wrote.

Sister Kristin M. Yee, the second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, posted on March 1. She shared how, when painting, she has a stage called the “in-between period” where the painting doesn’t quite look how it’s supposed to. She said this part is essential in the process.

“You are doing better than you think. Keep going, the Lord loves you and desires your happiness. Your ‘life painting’ is in progress, and He will be with you each step of the way.”

Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on March 5. He shared a journal entry from his father-in-law, the first area president in Africa, about the potential of the Church in Zimbabwe. Elder Gong dedicated the Harare Zimbabwe Temple on March 1.

He said the dedication “reminds us the Lord is hastening His work (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:73) to bring the blessings of His restored gospel everywhere to families in time and eternity.”

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 2 expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to travel to Brazil with The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.

“I am grateful for this assignment as it is something I never dreamed of doing. Accompanying The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square in my home country, in the very city where I grew up, was an incredible experience.”

From the Young Men Worldwide account, Brother David J. Wunderli — first counselor in the Young Men general presidency — posted a reel on March 4 about an experience he had while attending a ward sacrament meeting this past week.

“When we experience moments of doubt, I encourage us to look back and remember how the gospel of Jesus Christ makes us feel.”

Elder Gérald Caussé of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a March 1 reel sharing about his recent visit to France and his meeting with the missionaries of the Paris France Mission. He said that it was something he would never forget.

Elder Caussé posted another reel on March 5 about visiting the office where he served as a stake president in Paris, France. He shared how much joy and gratitude it brought him to see those for whom he had previously served while in that calling.

“This is where I learned that serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is all about helping others walk the covenant path.”

Elder Gérald Caussé returns to France to minister as an Apostle

Elder Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on March 1 about a sacred experience he had with President Jeffrey R. Holland, who died in late December 2025.

“Today I am sharing a sacred moment where I observed President Holland studying the names of the Savior. Every one of us has been invited to come unto Jesus Christ. Each of us has the opportunity to develop a relationship with Him.”

On the Young Women Worldwide Instagram page, the Young Women general presidency posted a reel on March 3 sharing from the “For the Strength of Youth” booklet how having a physical body is a gift.

“Do we realize the gift that is ours in our physical body?” they wrote in their post.

E. Emmerson Mnangagwa, president of Zimbabwe, along with other interfaith, government and civic leaders, toured the new Harare Zimbabwe Temple.

Invitations for a special open house tour were given to leaders who expressed interest in seeing the first temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built in Zimbabwe.

Two General Authority Seventies — Elder Erich W. Kopischke, an assistant executive director in the Temple Department, and Elder Vaiangina Sikahema, second counselor in the Africa South Area presidency — gave a tour to the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe and his vice president, the Honorable K.C.D. Mohadi.

Elder Sikahema presented Mnangagwa with a Christus statue and artwork of the temple. The president expressed interest in returning to the temple and an impression to connect with God.

Mohadi spoke after the tour about the good that can be done for society when churches and governments work together and how essential churches are to society.

“I felt closer to the Almighty, closer to the Creator, and it is a wonderful place to be,” Mohadi said.

According to a Jan. 23 news release from the Church’s Africa Newsroom, other invited guests included ambassadors from Ghana, China, Indonesia, Portugal, Russia, the United States and Zambia. Other ministers and representatives from the Zimbabwe government came from the ministries of tourism and hospitality, religious affairs, provincial affairs, local government and public works, defense, education, women affairs and foreign affairs as well as the National Assembly.

One leader said that he felt he was walking on holy ground.

Speaking to media members and journalists, Elder Kopischke shared how excited he was for them to see inside the temple.

“When you walk with us through this house today, I invite you to look beyond your curiosity,” Elder Kopischke said. “Look beyond the structure, beyond the brick and mortar. Take time to reflect, ponder and … feel. Feel the light and feel the peace within the walls of this building and the surrounding grounds. In this house we come to know [Jesus Christ], who He really is, and we bind ourselves to Him through sacred covenants. We promise that we will love God with all our hearts and that we will love our neighbor.”

ZTN Prime and another media organization did live broadcasts from the gardens surrounding the temple.

Alison Chitiyo, a 16-year-old member of the Church, also spoke to the media.

“The family is our greatest treasure,” Chitiyo said. “My family shaped who I am today. Family memories remind me that our connections are truly sacred. Knowing that families can be together forever brings me immense peace.”

For members of the Church, temples are considered the house of the Lord and differ from meetinghouses and chapels where Sunday worship services are held. In temples, the teachings of Jesus Christ are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other ceremonies that unite families for eternity.

Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the temple on March 1. Church and community members are encouraged to attend the open house, which continues through Feb. 7, excluding Sundays.

Elder Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted a reel on Feb. 23, sharing that senior Church leaders do understand what it’s like to grow up in homes that are not completely centered on the gospel. He said his father was not a member of the Church.

“Whether you grew up in a gospel-centered home or not, you can create one. It begins with you.”

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on Feb. 24 about his visit with John Dramani Mahama, president of the Republic of Ghana. He shared how the Church is following the Savior’s example of serving others.

“I was impressed by President Mahama’s vision for a hopeful future in Ghana. In our commitment to follow the Savior’s example, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hopes to contribute to his vision by blessing lives through various humanitarian efforts.”

During ministry in West Africa, Elder Quentin L. Cook meets president of Ghana

Elder Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on Feb. 26 some of his remarks from his devotional address to BYU–Idaho students on Feb. 22. He referenced President Dallin H. Oaks’ BYU devotional address, sharing how when prophets repeat warnings, attention should be riveted toward it.

“So, what do you do to rivet your attention, to assure that you survive spiritually by having the constant influence of the Holy Ghost?” he asked viewers. “You look carefully at your daily activities. ... You pray for inspiration and courage to make any changes you need to make.”

Elder Andersen testifies ‘God has a Prophet upon the earth’

President Porter posted a video on Feb. 24 with the Primary Worldwide account, quoting from President Oaks’ October 2025 general conference remarks.

Commenting on the Prophet’s words about strengthening the family, she said: “He counseled us to establish spiritual traditions and create opportunities for growth. How grateful I am that when we follow prophetic guidance, every family can be strengthened.”

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared a family’s conversion story in a reel on Feb. 22.

He posted again on Feb. 25, sharing about his experience accepting — on behalf of the Church — the highest award the Legislative Assembly of the Brazilian state of São Paulo can give.

“I want to thank the members of the Church in Brazil who give of their time to bless the lives of people in Brazil. Because of their faith in Jesus Christ, they love God and love their neighbor. That is what this recognition represents.”

In a Feb. 22 post on the Young Men Worldwide account, Young Men General President Timothy L. Farnes spoke of the apostle Peter’s experience walking on water, who called out to Jesus, “Lord, save me” (Matthew 14:30).

President Farnes said: “If the young men and the young women of the world can begin their day with a call out to [the Father], ‘Lord, save me,’ they face Him to start the day. They’ll feel His power. And He’s immediately available for them.”

Elder Gérald Caussé of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared a reel on Feb. 24 highlighting the impact ministering can have on people’s lives.

“When we minister, our role is to bring the Savior’s love,” he wrote alongside the video. “It is not by chance that my first official visit as an Apostle to a country outside of the United States is my home country of France. I am so happy that part of the visit was a reunion with my dear friend Sylvain and his family.”

Sister J. Anette Dennis, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, posted a video clip on Feb. 22 with remarks from her April 2024 general conference talk, “Put Ye On the Lord Jesus Christ.”

She testified of the “covenant relationship” between individuals and God the Father and Jesus Christ. “The great blessings of that covenant relationship are well worth the price,” she said.

Elder Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared a reel on Feb. 24 about his wife, Sister Christine Gilbert, and the impact she has had on others.

“Today is her birthday, and I want to acknowledge all the times she has nudged me to be a better husband, a kinder father and a more committed disciple.”

Brother David J. Wunderli, first counselor in the Young Men general presidency, shared a message on the Young Men Worldwide account on Feb. 20, with counsel directed to young men advancing to the teacher office in the Aaronic Priesthood.

Building off the Savior’s invitation in the 2026 youth theme to “Walk with me,” Brother Wunderli said: “Envision yourself walking with the Savior. When you are with your family, envision Him walking by your side. How would you talk to your siblings?” He added, “In the service as a teacher and your responsibilities, think of having Him as your companion.”
