Other operating temples are found in Campinas, Curitiba, Manaus, Porto Alegre and Recife. An additional temple in Rio de Janeiro is under construction, with another three planned for Belem, Brasilia and Salvador for a total of 11 temples in different stages in Brazil.
The Fortaleza Brazil Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson in the October 2009 general conference, with its groundbreaking on Nov. 11, 2011, at the site on Avenida Santos Dumont in Fortaleza.
With the Church in Brazil since 1929, the country is home to nearly 1.4 million Latter-day Saints in 2,089 congregations as well as 35 missions.
