All Star players\ Two LDS women were selected to participate with the U.S. All Star fast pitch softball team, playing in the 1991 World Championship of Girls Softball in Australia. Dawn Kurihara, a sports trainer at the University of Hawaii, was selected as the team trainer. Lynette Bird, an all-star player from Sacramento, Calif., was chosen as catcher for the team. Dawn, a member of the Aiea Ward, Honolulu Hawaii West Stake, is a BYU graduate. Lynette currently attends BYU and is a member of the BYU 28th Ward, Brigham Young University 9th Stake. The U.S. team lost to Japan in the final game to win the silver medal.

Celebrates 104th

TWIN FALLS, IDAHO

Jacob F. Arrington of the Twin Falls 6th Ward, Twin Falls Idaho Stake, recently celebrated his 104th birthday. He was born in Read Hill, Tenn., Oct. 19, 1887. He married the late Annie Shields May 1, 1914. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple in 1927. They had four children, and Brother Arrington now has 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He served two full-time missions, three stake missions and maintained 100 percent home teaching commitment into his 90s.

Elected chairman\ SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH\ Enid Greene recently was elected chairman of the National Young Republican Federation based in Washington, D.C. A member of the Federal Heights Ward, Salt Lake Emigration Stake, she is serving as an assistant to the chief of staff to Utah Gov. Norman Bangerter.\

Wins Russian contest\ FORT COLLINS, COLO.

Donnie Allison, a member of the BYU 46th Ward, Brigham Young University 4th Stake, finished as the top American student in a Russian language and culture contest held in Moscow this past summer. Donnie, 18, won a "super gold" medal after studying Russian for one year at Rocky Mountain High School. He currently attends BYU and plans to major in Russian and German.

Multiple Missionaries

Korea Seoul Mission Pres. Mike Nicholes and his wife, Lynne, have five family members serving missions, which includes their service in Korea. Son Adam is serving in the Ohio Cleveland Mission, daughter Julie is serving in the Germany Frankfurt Mission and son Seth is serving in the Hong Kong Mission.

Howard and Leona Kelly were recently called to serve as family history missionaries assigned to the Family History Department in Salt Lake City. Two children are also serving missions, making four missionaries in the family. Margo serves in the Texas Corpus Christi (Spanish) Mission and Colin serves in the Nova Scotia Halifax Mission.

Places second

HENDERSON, NEV.

Nick Day, a member of the Quail Ridge Ward, and Chad Hermansen, a member of the Green Valley Ward, both in the Las Vegas Nevada Green Valley Stake, recently returned from Detroit, Mich., where they came in second place in the Little League World Series. The 13-year-olds are members of the Green Valley Junior Little League, winning the Las Vegas tournament, then the Nevada tournament, the division tournament, and the western regional tournament. Their team was one of four teams from the United States to participate. Teams came from Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Germany as well. Chad, a center fielder, batted a .450 for the tournament and Nick, shortstop, batted .385.

State champion

OVERLAND PARK, KAN.

Tom Swanson, 18, was the state champion in the 3,200 meters and finished second in the 1,600 meter race at the 1991 6A state track meet in Kansas. He won three letters in both track and cross country and was a three-time pick to the All-Sun Country cross country team. He is a member of the Overland Park 2nd Ward, Olathe Kansas Stake.

Heavyweight champ\ HOPKINSVILLE, KY.\ William Butler Yates, 17, of the Hopkinsville 1st Ward, Hopkinsville Kentucky Stake, was recently awarded the AAU/USA Elite Heavyweight Wrestling Championship in Battlecreek, Mich. William competed in the free style competition in the region before advancing to win the national championship. He has been wrestling for seven years and has lettered in wrestling for four years.

Teachers of year\ GLENDALE, CALIF.\ Patricia Pinkston and Chloe Ross, members of the La Crescenta California Stake, each received the Distinguished California Teachers of the Year Award. They are traveling elementary music teachers for the Glendale Unified School District. Between the two of them, they teach all the elementary music students in grades four through six in the district. Sister Pinkston is a member of the Verdugo Hills 1st Ward and Sister Ross is from the La Canada 2nd Ward.

Receives award

ROCKVILLE, MD.

Brad Houck recently received the Youth Achievement Award from the National Council on Communicative Disorders at a ceremony in the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Deaf since age 5, Brad has worked hard and his persistence has enabled him to overcome various challenges. He has become proficient in speaking and reading lips. His home ward is the Rockville Ward, Washington D.C. Stake. He currently serves in the Michigan Lansing Mission.

Gold medalist\ SOUTH HEDLAND, AUSTRALIA\ Katrina Lee, 11, received a gold medal and certificate for being part of her school's 10-member netball team, which went undefeated, and won gold medals in the sub-junior netball competition against other primary schools in the Hedland area. Katrina was a high scorer in every game. Katrina also recently received the Outstanding Student Award for her scholastic achievements at her school. She is a member of the Port Hedland Branch in the Northwest Australia District of the Australia Perth Mission.

Top pilot

BELGRADE, MONT.

Linda H. Marshall, a member of the Belgrade Ward, Bozeman Montana Stake, was awarded the Amelia Earhart Memorial Career Scholarship for advanced flight training at the Annual Convention of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of more than 6,000 women pilots. The scholarship is awarded each year to members seeking to advance their aviation careers and is in memory of Amelia Earhart, first woman to solo across the Atlantic who later was lost in her attempt to fly around the world in 1937. Sister Marshall began her flying career in 1979 to get over her fear of flying. Her husband is also a pilot. She is a flight instructor and a member of the Civil Air Patrol serving as its check pilot.

Elected chaplain\ NEW ORLEANS, LA.

Chaplain Boyd W. Winterton (Cmdr.) was elected to a second term as national chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) at the recent national convention in New Orleans, La. A member of the East Millcreek 4th Ward, Salt Lake East Millcreek Stake, he served in 1987-88 as national chaplain for the VFW, which has 2.2 million members. He served in the same position for the Reserve Officer's Association during 1979-80 and 1990. He is the Chief of Chaplain Service at the Salt Lake V.A. Medical Center.

Travels with choir

CUT BANK, MONT.\ Tauna Lee Freeman, a member of the Cut Bank Branch, Great Falls Montana Stake, recently returned from Europe after traveling with the Montana Youth Choir. She was one of 44 members of the choir to be chosen to represent the state. With the choir, she toured Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. She is attending Ricks College.
