New temple presidents

Five new temple presidents have been called by the First Presidency, with their wives called as matrons. They will begin service soon.

Mark Alma Baer, 66, Southglenn 1st Ward, Littleton Colorado Stake, called as president of the Denver Colorado Temple, succeeding President Dennis K. Brown. President Baer's wife, Jane Waldron Baer, will serve as temple matron. President Baer is a counselor in the Denver Colorado Temple. He has served as stake president, bishop, high councilor, senior couple missionary and temple ordinance worker. A retired dentist, he was born in Tremonton, Utah, to Reuben Marcus and Mildred Theurer Baer.

Sister Baer is an assistant to the matron of the Denver Colorado Temple. She served with her husband on a senior couple mission. She has also served as a ward Relief Society president, ward Young Women president, seminary teacher and temple ordinance worker. She was born in Tremonton, Utah, to Russel Bowen and Lucille Waldron.

Elder Clate W. Mask Jr., 66, Windrift Ward, Gilbert Arizona Stake, called as president of the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple, succeeding President Benjamin I. Martinez. President Mask's wife, Paula Carol Garns Mask, will serve as temple matron. A member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, he served as president of the Spain Barcelona Mission, bishop, bishop's counselor and Sunday School teacher. A retired teacher and administrator for the Church Educational System, he was born in El Paso, Texas, to Clate W. and Marva Gonzalez Mask.

Sister Mask served with her husband as he presided over the Spain Barcelona Mission. She also served as ward Relief Society president, counselor in Young Women and Primary presidencies, Relief Society teacher and Primary teacher. She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Paul L. and Velda Lindsay Garns.

Grant Richard Oscarson, 74, Chesterfield 1st Ward, St. Louis Missouri Stake, called as president of the St. Louis Missouri Temple, succeeding President Wendell E. Brown. President Oscarson's wife, Linda Lochhead Oscarson, will serve as temple matron. President Oscarson is a patriarch in the St. Louis Missouri Stake and a volunteer assistant temple recorder in the St. Louis Missouri Temple. He served as president of the Sweden Stockholm Mission, mission president's counselor, stake president, stake president's counselor, high councilor, bishop, bishop's counselor and high priests group leader. The retired president of Enterprise Mentors International, he was born in Seattle, Wash., to Roy Wilhelm and Vera Brown Oscarson.

Sister Oscarson, patriarch's scribe and Relief Society music director, served with her husband as he presided over the Sweden Stockholm Mission. She served as a stake Relief Society president, ward Primary president, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Relief Society teacher, seminary teacher, temple ordinance worker and on a stake public affairs community relations council. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., to Angus Tullock Jr. and Matilda Evangeline Thurmon Lockhead.

Adolfo Avalos Rico, 70, Cholula Ward, Oaxaca Mexico Stake, called as president of the Oaxaca Mexico Temple, succeeding President Limhi Ontiveros. President Avalos' wife, Josefina De Lozano Herrera de Avalos, will serve as temple matron. President Avalos serves as a high councilor. He has served as president of the Guatemala Guatemala City South Mission, president of the Mexico Missionary Training Center, Area Seventy, temple president's counselor, stake president, bishop, stake president's counselor and bishop's counselor. A retired educator of the Church Educational System, he was born in Mexico City, Mexico, to Tomas and Maria de Jesus Rico Avalos.

Sister Avalos is a stake Relief Society president. She served with her husband as he presided over the Guatemala Guatemala City South Mission and the Mexico Missionary Training Center. She also served as ward Relief Society president, ward Young Women president and ward Primary president. She was born in Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico, to Agricol Lozano and Josefina Herrera.

Lynn Richard Shurtleff, 69, North Field 14th Ward, Pleasant Grove Utah North Field Stake, called as president of the Montevideo Uruguay Temple, succeeding President N. Gaylon Hopkins. President Shurtleff's wife, Alma Don McArthur Shurtleff, will serve as temple matron. President Shurtleff is a ward missionary. He also served as president of the Ecuador Quito Mission, president of the Colombia Missionary Training Center, stake president, stake president's counselor, bishop and temple ordinance worker. A retired professor of music at Santa Clara University, he was born in Vallejo, Calif., to Basil Wells and Helen Ann Cheshire Shurtleff.

Sister Shurtleff is a ward organist. She served with her husband as he presided over the Ecuador Quito Mission and over the Colombia Missionary Training Center. She also served in a stake Relief Society presidency, as a ward Relief Society president, stake Relief Society counselor, ward Young Women president and ward organist. She was born in St. George, Utah, to Joseph and Gertrude McGregor McArthur.
