Elder Jack H. Goaslind, Jr., an emeritus General Authority and a lifelong champion of youth, died April 27 in Salt Lake City. He was 83.
Elder Goaslind is survived by his wife, Gwen Caroline Bradford Goaslind, and their six children.
A Salt Lake City native, Elder Goaslind was born April 18, 1928, to Jack H. and Anita Jack Goaslind. He graduated from the University of Utah and served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
He was called to preside over the Arizona Tempe Mission in 1975.
Elder Goaslind was a vice president of a metals corporation before being called to the First Quorum of the Seventy on Sept. 30, 1978, at age 50.
He twice served as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy, from 1985 - 87 and again from 1995 - 98.
He would become synonymous with Scouting and for his work with the youth of the Church, serving as second counselor in the Aaronic Priesthood MIA general presidency (1972-1974) and later as the Young Men general president (1990-1998).
Elder Goaslind was granted emeritus status on Oct. 3, 1998. Two years later he was called as president of the Manti Utah Temple.
Sister Goaslind served as the temple matron.
In 2007, Elder Goaslind was inducted into the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing at the Catholic Church's Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City. He was honored because of his humanitarian efforts in the former Portuguese colony of Sao Tome off the coast of West Africa while serving as president of the British Isles-Africa Area from 1987-90.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2, at noon in the Salt Lake Olympus Stake Center, 2675 East 4430 South, Salt Lake City.
