Sister Patricia Terry Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, served as a counselor in the Young Women general presidency from 1984 to 1986. During this time, Elder Holland was also president of Brigham Young University.
In this video, titled “Live by the Spirit,” Elder and Sister Holland speak about those busy and challenging years.
“To be called to serve on the general level was such an honor to me. But it took me to my knees. It was really quite overwhelming,” Sister Holland said.
Elder Holland added: “It was a hard time. President [Gordon B.] Hinckley later said, ‘I don’t know what on earth possessed us to do that.’ But I do. Pat was essential. I say that with all the bias that I can claim. … I think she gave all that she could give flat out in the Young Women’s program. And we learned to be disciplined and help each other.”
