BYU Easter Conference: Look to the Savior's perfect example

It is important for individuals to know who they worship, said Robert L. Millet, professor of ancient scripture at BYU, during BYU's Easter Conference held Saturday, March 27, in the Joseph Smith Building on the BYU campus. During his remarks, he shared ways in which individuals can know the Savior better.

"In the end it will matter precious little what we know about a myriad of things, if we have not come to know through the power of the Holy Spirit, the God we worship," said Brother Millet. "This is one of the great purposes of mortality, thus the quest of a lifetime. It is in this life that we prepare to meet God, that we come to know Him, thereby grasp what we worship and comprehend who we worship."

Drawing from the scriptures and teachings of Church leaders, Brother Millet spoke of some specific things that the Lord Jesus Christ is, and what He is not.

"Jesus is not a personal Savior who only seeks to meet my needs," Brother Millet said. "He is the risen crucified Lord of all creation, who seeks to guide me back. ...

"More than a teacher, more than an inspiring teacher, more than a great moral teacher, He is the Son of God, God's son."

Individuals can learn a lot by looking at how Christ spoke and how He responded to questions and criticisms.

"Jesus Christ is our Exemplar. … He did come to earth to show us the way for He is the way."

Brother Millet spoke of religion and the importance of living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He spoke of the need to treat others the way Christ would treat them, as well as strive to live free of sin.

"Religion isn't something we only do on Sunday while we go about our business the other six days of the week," Brother Millet said. "As Latter-day Saints, our religion is life, 24/7.

Brother Millet spoke of pure religion, and the importance of looking to the Savior's example and the direction of the Spirit to live it.

"This is the Lord's church. He is at the head. Because it is His church it needs to be conducted according to His plan and under His direction through the Holy Spirit," he said. "Pure religion is far less concerned about what we do. [Pure religion] is who we are and what we become. Pure religion is a thing of the heart."

Individuals experience a transformation of character as they come closer to God by following the Savior's perfect example, Brother Millet said. The role of Christ as the Savior of the world is the way to salvation and through His merits only will all be able to receive salvation.

"Jesus is central to the plan of salvation. ... We cannot save ourselves," Brother Millet said. "We cannot earn our exaltation. We cannot exercise the sufficient grip and willpower to do the works of righteousness and battle against Satan on our own. Christ is our Lord, our Savior, our Redeemer, our King. Without Him, we have nothing, with Him we have everything."
