BYU offensive guard Mohammed Elewonibi was named winner of the Outland Trophy Dec. 6, an honor given annually to the top college football lineman in America.
Elewonibi is a native of Nigeria who never played high school football. He was playing soccer at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, when the coach of that school's football team introduced him to the sport.He transferred from Snow, a junior college, to BYU in fall 1988 and will complete his collegiate career Dec. 29 in the Sea World Holiday Bowl against Penn State.
Elewonibi beat out center Michael Tanks of Florida State and nose tackle Moe Gardner of Illinois in the voting by the Football Writers Association of America.
