New directors announced for BYU Jerusalem Center

George A. Horton Jr., associate director of the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, has been named director of the center for a three-year term that began July 8.

Horton succeeds Martin B. Hickman, who is returning to his BYU faculty position in the Department of Political Science after serving as director for the past 18 months, Pres. Rex E. Lee announced.Succeeding Horton as associate director is Wayne W. Clark, former chairman of the Department of Economics at BYU and most recently director of Cooperative Education. C. Joseph Rowberry, director of Accounting and Financial Reporting, is the new assistant director for administration.

Horton, former chairman of BYU's Ancient Scripture Department, started with the Church Educational System in 1953 and directed the LDS Institute of Religion at UCLA before joining BYU's faculty in 1983.

As associate director, Clark oversees the academic program. During the past two years, he has served as director of Cooperative Education and as an economics professor. Rowberry has worked at BYU for 35 years, serving in various positions, including chief accountant.
