Church News: Deaths

Donna Durrant Sorensen, a member of the Relief Society general board 1935-45 and a counselor to Relief Society Gen. Pres. Amy Brown Lyman for three years, died June 4. Sister Sorensen, 85, was born in Spanish Fork, Utah. She attended the BYU Training School and graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in 1927. She served in the Central States Mission and then at American Fork High School before marrying Wesley A. "Brick" Sorensen in 1929. She served for 11 years as a member of the Deseret Sunday School Union Board. In addition she taught Gospel Doctrine and spent many hours doing family history work.

LeConte Stewart, 99, died June 2 at a Clearfield, Utah, nursing home of causes incident to age. He was known as "dean of Mormon art" and painted murals in three temples - Laie, Hawaii; Cardston, Alberta; and Mesa, Ariz.

He was born April 16, 1891, in southern Utah, but spent most of his life in Kaysville, Utah. He was 20 years old before he finished his first painting, but then went on to art school in New York City. He was dean of the University of Utah's art department for almost 20 years. In addition to his art, he was known for his quick, sometimes self-deprecating wit and his teaching ability.
