A Church member has been appointed composer-in-residence for Virginia's Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, and as such will compose two pieces, the first of which will premiere at the Kennedy Center March 6, 1991.
Daniel E. Gawthrop of the Fredericksburg 1st Ward, Fredericksburg Virginia Stake, is serving a two-year term with the orchestara, which began July 1.He works as announcer/producer for WETA FM91, a northern Virginia radio station.
Gawthrop is composer of more than 40 published compositions.
Since its inception in 1957, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra has performed in the Washington Metropolitan area. Under the direction of William Hudson, the orchestra reaches more than 100,000 listeners annually.
Gawthrop studied organ and composition at Michigan State University and BYU. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and in Europe.
The recipient of numerous awards, he has just completed pieces for the Arlington Symphony in Virginia and the St. Joseph Symphony and Chorus of St. Joseph, Mo.
He resides in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington D.C. with his wife, Jane, and their five children. He teaches the high priests group in the Fredericksburg 1st Ward.
