The First Presidency this week announced new assignments in area presidencies worldwide. The changes will be effective Aug. 15, 1992.
Sixty-nine members of the Seventy have been assigned to presidencies in 23 areas. The Church's 23rd area was announced by the First Presidency three weeks ago with the division of the Mexico Area into the Mexico North and Mexico South areas. (See June 6 Church News.)The Mexico North Area will be headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Mexico South Area in Mexico City.
Other members of the Seventy have been given assignments at Church headquarters in the Young Men and Sunday School general presidencies, and in the Missionary, Family History, Temple, Correlation, Curriculum, Historical, and Priesthood departments.
Included in the new assignments, both in area presidencies and at Church headquarters, are the 15 new members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy who were announced by the First Presidency June 6. The new General Authorities were called in anticipation of the granting of emeritus status or releases to certain members of the Seventy at the October general conference and the creation of the new area in Mexico.
Another milestone of Church growth in Latin America was reached with the creation of a second area in Mexico.
Mexico is the first country outside the United States and Canada to have two areas within its boundaries, and with the division of the Mexico area there are now six areas in Latin America.
The Mexico North Area will be headquartered at the largest LDS population center in the north, Monterrey. Its boundaries cover the greater part of Mexico's geographical area and include roughly half of Mexico's LDS population.
The division line between the two areas crosses Mexico about 50 miles north of Mexico City.
Included in the Mexico North Area are 60 stakes and nine missions. The missions are headquartered in Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Leon, Mazatlan, Monterrey, Tampico, Tijuana and Torreon.
Church membership in the north area is about 270,000.
Mexico South Area boundaries include the major population center of Mexico City, and southern Mexico as well as the Yucatan Peninsula.
The area has 64 stakes and eight missions. The missions are Merida, Mexico City East, Mexico City North, Mexico City South, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tuxtla-Gutierrez and Veracruz. Membership in the south area is about 330,000.
The Church's area presidencies were first announced eight years ago this week, on June 24, 1984. Of the 13 areas announced, seven were in the United States and Canada and six were in other parts of the world. Today, there are nine areas in the United States and Canada, and the rest of the world has 14.
