God chastens those whom he loves

The Lord's reproof and subsequent forgiveness of Joseph Smith for the loss of the 116 manuscript pages reflects a doctrine explained in Heb. 12:5-6 and D&C 95:1.

When Joseph's repentance was complete, and after a season of probation, the Lord returned to him the Nephite record and the power to translate.A penitent Thomas B. Marsh, who earlier in his life apostatized after serving as president of the Quorum of the Twelve, understood the principle in these scriptures; namely, that the Lord chastens those He loves.

In September 1857, he was introduced as a speaker at general conference by Brigham Young. He then told the congregation: "If there are any among this people who should ever apostatize as I have done, prepare your backs for a good whipping, if you are such as the Lord loves." (Quoted by President Gordon B. Hinckley in April 1984 general conference.)
