The purpose of the Church is to help individuals and families come unto Christ and obtain eternal life (see Moro. 10:32; Moses 1:39). Priesthood leaders are called to help with this (see Eph. 4:11-13). How they accomplish it will vary depending on their gifts, background, and commitment.
However, the Lord taught that all effective priesthood leaders have some characteristics in common. They love and obey God the Eternal Father. They have faith in Jesus Christ and His purposes. They love other people. And they live exemplary lives. (See D&C 4:5-6.) Such leaders receive personal revelation from the Lord appropriate to their calling and gain the confidence and support of those they serve.- Melchizedek Priesthood Leadership Handbook, p. 1
